Hello everybody, sorry about the delay in me getting back to you all on this— things have been a bit busy. Burning Life, (like its real-world counterpart Burning Man) will allow nudity and adult themes in it's Mature areas. However, like Burning Man, there will be an area reserved for PG content. RL Burning Man has a very large area near center camp called Kidsville or Kids Camp where many people with children prefer to camp and where the entire community follows a PG rating.

At Burning Life '08, the four regions around the Center Camp cafe and the main stage will carry a PG rating. This is because that area will be the most frequented by Real Life media who have a need for PG backdrops for their broadcasts, and it will also be the focal point of educational information about the two related events. We want everyone to be able to learn about our community without being uncomfortable. In any attempt to be all-inclusive, we must respect the idea that many of planet Earth's cultures find nudity and public references to sexuality to be highly offensive and downright irritating— in order to include them, we must— and will— provide PG areas.

We will also ask that participants not following PG guidelines maintain a respectful draw-distance from the edge of the PG regions. There is plenty of room for adult themes, and no excuse for making others unhappy.

The rest of the event (18 sims) will be rated Mature. However, that still does not mean it's a free-for-all. Just as at Burning Man, very adult behavior must be conducted in private behind your tent flap, and not visible from public areas with default camera constraints. Nudity is allowed. Art work with Mature themes are allowed. The human body and the adult mind are accepted, but not forced upon others.

Therefore, sexual harassment of any kind is not allowed, either at Burning Man or Burning Life and will be grounds for eviction. Putting on an enormous attachment and chasing someone who does not want to be chased is sexual harassment, and is not allowed. Verbal abuse will not be tolerated. With freedom comes responsibility; we are adults, but we are polite.

Burning Life is a reflection of a real-world entity, and we will follow *its* conventions, which are stated above. We are all adults here: come dressed as a kid, a Gorean, or a Bovine Lummox... as long as you respect others you will be respected in turn.

I hope this puts us all on the same page and moving towards a really fun and massively creative event!

Cheers--

TY for the update, Dusty!

/me points at Disable Camera Constraints.

Does your "not visible" mean "not visible unless somebody cams into the area"?

edit: if you change your post to clarify this, feel free to clean mine up (aka delete it).

I'm not sure if the four PG sims are to contain any content not created by the organizers. If so, that's likely to be problematic inasmuch as the PG rating is really not adequate to convey the degree of modesty demanded there. Presumably, if only the organizers contribute content to the PG sims, they can be well-versed in the real (and quite valid) constraints there.

Thanks much for posting this clarification. Too much of BL07 was "drama for drama's sake," so one hopes communication such as this can avert some of those distractions this time.

*Great* clarification, Dusty. Will these sims be purely infrastructure, or will there be plots within them available?

Dusty, Wouldn't the easiest way to deal with this and also the issue of pg sims bordering mature sims be to surround the pg area with sims (open-space grade) that would have walkways or small booths or attractions (statues?) that would have some content but would for the most part serve as a buffer zone between the busy PG area and the mature areas.

If the teen & main grid were combined into one grid, that'd be a fantastic idea, Gordon. Since everybody at BL will be (at least in theory) a RL adult, it's not a bad idea but might be a little overkill. There's gotta be a line somewhere where people just need to pretend that their SL eyes, even with camera constraints, are 1000x better than their RL eyes.

If LL does decide to add buffer regions, which I certainly would not object to, and they have the spare hardware, I'd vote for them using full sims instead of openspace sims. With an openspace only having 1/4th the horsepower of a full sim you'd risk having the buffer zone turn into a glue zone, especially if any crowds were hanging out in there..

Thank you for this clarification! It's great to see that nipples won't be taboo this year on statues in mature sims and that there will be a PG place for those who are uncomfortable with the more mature themes.

Marianne,

Of the four PG regions, two are entirely given over to art and each of those have 10 small plots of land (with 200 prims) for building art installation/sculpture. The other 2 regions contain quite a bit of infrastructure, (Media Mecca, Rangers, etc.) but I'd say about roughly half the space is available for PG theme camp builds. There are a few spots on the adjacent M regions where we will want to place PG builds as well, just to create a visual buffer, and we'll be figuring that out as we go along. I'll try to post a rough map of what the plan looks like for this year later today.
