I just finished flying the entire length of the SLRR, and there isn't a single damned train, did they all disappear during an update?

My parcel borders the SLRR, and you are right, the train has not been running for a month or more. Once, I send a request to support to get it working again, and they eventually did after explaining twice that it was their problem to fix. It took almost 3 weeks! But, after a time, the train disappears again, I think when it crosses sim borders.
On the good side, there is a resident who builds trains that can travel on the tracks and you can ride it! Look at the Train Controller in Crumbi (250,182,42) and right-click it to get profile of the resident for more information. _____________________

All,
I just found the SLRR Blog http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/10/09/second-life-railroad-stations-resident-construction-bids/ and Thoguht I'ld lookup the Rail Road. IT's nice but the trains it seems have long since stopped. Will the trains roll again?? Elseer Rau |

I wish LL would outsource the railroad to a resident, see which residents want to do it, look into their experience running things like this, building, scripting and essentially let them have full controls of the land rent free while still having it remain technically a linden project.

More than one actually!

There's a choo-choo???!!! YAY! Actually there are 3, there are currently 3 train lines that work, There is a line between Bhaga and Paranthene (the 'North' Line) one between Spini and Sabre (the 'Central' Line and lastly one between Jubata and Tuliptree (the 'South' Line). All three of these lines are operational for trains (ie: they have the required guide installed). There are various other connecting lines, but they are still being worked on. I even recently saw some additional track being laid up past Anilis. I've been running trains in a somewhat consistent basis for about the past month on all 3 lines. There are of course the normal issues with running objects across multiple sims, for the most part I understand these issues and have created workarounds. By far the central line is the most reliable as it seems the script performance/lag along those 20 or so sims is fairly reasonable. By far the biggest problem is the trains taking too long to cross a sim and autoreturn sending it to my lost+found, but I have some ideas to resolve that as well. My goal is to have trains running on all the lines in a 100% reliable fashion, some have told me it can't be done, well I suppose we'll just see about that. I'm always making tweaks and improvements to the trains to make them run better, right now if you see one feel free to right click and become the Engineer. I'm also interested in experiences and feedback. As much fun as I'm having solving problems and making them work -- they really are just decorations unless people can enjoy them. my main trainyard is at secondlife://Concinna/96/234/98 where I have built a few new locomotives and also have some built by others on display. I also have a very cool 3d map of the entire central line with a mini train to show location of the currently running train. the 'Train Controller' mentioned in a previous post is a launch point for that line, there is one in Crumbi (big brown box), one in Concinna, and one in Calleta (with a backup in Ribeata incase Calleta is having issues). All the trains are tracked and controlled from Concinna. I'm always happy to have conversations about trains and improvements, so stop by or send me an IM and I'll give you the grand tour (via rail of course). James |

Thank you for appearing here, James! If you want a small 16sq metre parcel in Mocis for the train control, just let me know! I have a parcel that borders the track.. Also, in Zale, I can probably arrange it for you too.

Also, in Zale, I can probably arrange it for you too. Gladly! Its good to see other train fans here in SL. As for the parcels, very generous offer! Unfortunately for a launch point I need about 32 prims, luckily the Arbor Project allowed me use of that in Crumbi, and in Concinna and Calleta I own parcels large enough where prims aren't an issue. I'll keep it in mind if I need to expand the network for tracking purposes. Right now the trains and controllers communicate via object to object email, but this has been inconsistent in performance and reliability. I'll probably switch to using http which is presumably more lightweight and reliable. But mostly I just want the trains to keep running, everything else is just eye candy ![]() James |

Sometimes, if you're very lucky, you can find the train derailed or stuck somewhere along the route.

Probably when cars work again too, ie never............................. Never say never my friend ![]() There is always a way to make things work, some easier than others. All worth the effort. And with the eventual Havok upgrade, things will even be better. Hope you'll take the train for a ride sometime. |

Sometimes, if you're very lucky, you can find the train derailed or stuck somewhere along the route. Or you can usually stop by the Concinna station and get the location of any/all of the running trains and grab a teleport to a nearby location and go for a ride. or be patient and wait for it to come by and hop on. There is a 3d map that shows its current location. James |

I rode the SL train for the first time a couple weeks ago. Enjoyed sinking under the tracks at every sim crossing. It was fun until it derailed into a hillside and turned upside-down

It was fun until it derailed into a hillside and turned upside-down ![]() It gets more adventerous each time you ride it. Under normal circumstances the train will actually reset itself to its 'last known' good position on the track, I made some additional improvements to this today as well, so hopefully the trains stick to the tracks a little bit better. Usually recovery time is 90 seconds at the most, if it can't find its way home by then it the train will die and a new one will be launched at the starting point again. James |

I would like to thank Jim for his courtesy and helpfulness. I tracked him down in world. He helped me locate the trains and has an excellent system setup at his base of operations that helps track the trains.
Thanks Jim! The Lindens should bring you on board and let you take over the design and running of the main lands rail system. I would bet the trains would be running then and fairly on time as well. |

Checked it out today and it is a cool system that you've set-up James! Only saw the one train running but it's definitely better than none at all! Just a shame it's just the engine atm, some carriages or tram-style engines would be nice (possibly easier to make with fewer prims too?) so that I can invite a friend to join me. Noticed it doesn't stop at stations either atm.
Do the linden track pieces use shouted messages then for allowing engines to find out where their next target location is? _____________________
