Many had problems with the update of the Windlight viewer; in fact, when you did what Linden required, you ended up not being able to open any Windlight version anymore. But here's the good news: The Windlight feature is now within the "Release Candidate 1.19.1.0".... and what's even better: it's great! It's really great! At least here on my Mac it runs smoothly... like the fastest viewer in a year, and it looks fantastic! Except for a few bugs (rotation in objects that have a particle script, "full bright" not displayed in some prims - but we had all of that in the old normal viewers too), the new version of the Windlight feature is really cool: no burn-out bright surfaces anymore, no shadows, that are simply plain black... it all looks really mature and clever now. I am so excited! Progress at last - after a long period of viewer disappointments now there seems to be peace on the client-front. Get it! Check it out!

One of the first things I noticed was that the location input box that appeared below the login area has been removed. That was a very handy feature. You could type in whatever location you wanted on login.

Also, the particle burst problem has not been fixed...

I wish they would remove the Search in the upper right hand corner!!!

There are three problems with it:

1. The input box has no 3D shading as most inputs do, so it doesn't look
intuitively like something you can type into. The font for the word Search
in the input box is different from the font used for all the other top level
menu items and thus looks further out of place. Like someone just
tacked it on there.

2. It's redundant. There's a bright blue SEARCH button already. And
it's also reachable via the top menu drop down. And via hotkey.

3. It replaced one of the most useful features of the UI: the network
status indicator bars.

But otherwise...it seems LL has been working hard and the client
works well.

That's a setting in preferences: Edit/Preferences/General/Show Start Location on Login Screen. If you never had a Release Candidate viewer installed before, you start out with all the default settings in Preferences, and that means that Show Start Location is unchecked.

The RC also resets all your Graphics preferences to the default for your hardware rather than taking them from the First Look viewer, so if you customized your settings you will have to do it over. Finally, any custom WindLight skies that you installed in your First Look will be gone; you will need to reinstall them.

I thought it was great to at 1st . .but then i noticed wen attaching an object to a different spot on my av or on my huds it wont attach on that new spot it just goes were it originally was. the only way to change an attachment spot it to drop the object to the ground an attach it to the new spot that way wich is kinda anoying. and for some reason i cant seem to get movies to play . and yes i made sure to check the media option in my preferances . other than that i seem to have no other problems yet . hopfully it works right soon so i can use it as my normal viewer.

Multiple icons
03-09-2008 09:02
I wish I could assume everyone knows that one can place multiple icons on one's desktop (one for 'classic', one for Dazzle, and one for WindLight Release candidate), but I suspect many think one must choose between them! Having all three icons and all three viewers on one's computer makes going between them easy... If there's a feature you wish was on one viewer and its only available on another, simply exit one viewer, log in on another and -- voila... Incidentally, here's the link for the Dazzle and Release Candidate options (dang, Dazzle is UGLY!) http://secondlife.com/community/firstlook.php -- :-)

The RC has been crashing on me at the point of initializing then sends the crash report. Anyone else having this problem?

You can remove it yourself :-)

preferences > General tab > uncheck Show search panel in overlay bar

poof it's gone and the old network status bars are back. :-)

I guess maybe the implementation of Windlight has reached the point where it no longer warrants it's own seperate development team and the conflicting that would occur in coding between 2 teams. Which also means the low rez graphicengine version of SL is nearing it's useby date too, perhaps it will be left for 3rd party's to provide basic viewers.

I have both of these exact problems with it too. In addition i dont know how or why but media stream is lagged out by SL maybe because the latest releases seem to be memory sucking vampires but often i cant get a stable connection to streaming media and i notice direct corrolotations with it cutting out and me doing just about anything other than standing still. The same URL is perfectly stable in winamp only when SL is closed.

OMG!!!! That is so GREAT! I can't believe it. Thank you. Johnnie.

I really need to spend more time going through the options
in the Preferences.

That's two important things I learned by opening my big mouth
on this thread. lol!
