This is a first folks and borders on the miraculous. I used the new Release Candidate last night and did NOT, I repeat NOT crash at all! I cannot recall the last time that I used an SL official client for such a lengthy period without crashing.... Well it was a one time miracle. I'm back to crashing on a routine basis, often after teleporting and using the cam to pan around. I've also noticed the situation where I get sudden prim or surface patch graphic distortions (i.e. gross enlongations) and within 30 seconds, a crash occurs. http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6343

0 FPS worse than crashing
05-02-2008 08:59
I went from 23fps to 0 - 1fps. Downloaded it to another slower PC and am getting 2fps. Anyone else seen this?

RC4 and 5 have been nice to me. The region crossing blackouts, land texture loss, and prim flickers are all gone. I've had a couple of crashes, but no real memory overload or leak issue. I have been seeing more grayness than usual, but I'd sooner blame the servers or my internets for that. (^_^)y

I agree RC 5 is much more stable in many respects, i like the new camera controls, tap-tap-run is cool, and they seemed to have fixed a few annoying bugs, but the frame rates have definitely dropped. compared to 1.19.1.4 and the Nicholaz EyeCandy EC-e versions, performance goes from 15-30fps down to 2-10fps in RC 5. even just looking at the ground or sky i was only getting 10-15 fps on RC5 while other versions go to 30 fps or higher in same region with the same view, same settings.

On the low FPS, I usually unrender clouds and turn off atmospheric shaders and water reflections. Generally gives a sufficient bump on FPS and using sun/moon only on lighting, unrendering fog & particles, and reducing draw distance are the next steps. I'd rather use the Nicholaz client but it needs a fix to allow TP and edit above 768.

Resolved!

Voice was enabled on default! I have heard of others having poor performance with voice but never used it so I did not realize how bad it can be. Now I can move on my crappy system at work. Can't wait to get home and TURN OFF voice, lol! Geeze!

From: Edward Kyomoon ...compared to 1.19.1.4 and the Nicholaz EyeCandy EC-e versions, performance goes from 15-30fps down to 2-10fps in RC 5... WOW! (O_O)... I've been seeing the opposite. For me 1.19.1 has been running at 15-20 frames and 1.20.4/5 has been running 15-30 frames. I haven't tried AA this time around because I run at really hi-res so I don't get much stairstepping. (^_^)y

And.. i cannot switch to my normal resolution, 1600 x 1200.. 800 x 600 on 22" monitor is incredible regards,...Geister

Well think yourself lucky .. I've had nothing but crashes on 3X Linux machines with RC5, It really is doing my head in I hope they dont make this viewer mandatory until its sorted, BUT RC4 was fine hardly a crash at all. So they fixed something for you but broke it for me. Sometimes a crash every ten mins.. VERY FRUSTRATING !!

RC5 works very well on my Linux laptop, better then all versions before.
I am still investigating, if "bump mapping and shining" leads to more crashes or not. It feels for me, that I have a looooooot less crashes when I deactivate it. Anyone else can confirm this?
(Run SL RC5 on Ubuntu Linux 8.04, Nvidia GeForce Go 7300)

(Run SL RC5 on Ubuntu Linux 8.04, Nvidia GeForce Go 7300) Well if I drop my graphics from Ultra to medium I get alot less crashes, but why should I , I like the way things look on Ultra. on RC4 I lived in ultra and hardly a crash. Hopefully though these problems will be resolved before the mandatory update. I'm guessing Hardy is alot to do with my personal problems though, Its pretty buggy to say the least for a LTS release as the Ubuntu forums will tell you . Whatever happens though I'll work through it , not many problems are insurmountable.

I tryed the two latest relase 4 and 5. For my have same problems, they takes too much memory when you stay along into same place. I try to open task manager and see how much memory is taken by sl. It start about 200 MB and increase, increase, increase also you still in a empty sim. After 20-30 min arrive to 800-900 MB and all is freezed for me, I have 1-2 fps, only if I tp to other location I can solve this for anther 10 min. I think something is wrong to erase memory that still full of olds dates. I have centrino duo 1.66 Mhz 3 Gb ram and graphics ati x1600 512 Mb. I'm back to 1.19 version that not have this big problem.
