One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

The newest version has proved to be, for me at least, a big step backward. It has a big memory leak, and produces Out of Memory and Stack Heap collision crashes on a frequent basis. The teleport bug is worse than ever.

Last night, I reinstalled 76116.

I then downloaded and installed Nich's EC-b patch. WONDERFUL! For one thing, the viewer now actually recognizes the correct amount of video RAM on my system (320 MB, not the more usual 256 or 512). My viewer settings were AUTOMATICALLY optimized for my hardware. My teleports were reliable, and MUCH faster than under any Windlight version released so far. Textures loaded faster, and my framerate was up, too. (although that might've been because I pegged the bandwidth slider).

Best of all, I ran for about four hours until finally crashing out. The crash was a much more "normal" one, the sort I've come to expect when using Nich's patches. Sudden, but clean. No Windows error messages.

LL had SERIOUSLY better check out what Nicholaz has done right. With his patch, WL 76116 is much better than any version we've seen yet.

...so I better leave the install .exe where it is right now and don't touch it....doesn't sound good at all!

UPDATE: Well, the Nicholaz windlight patch DOES have the teleport bug after all. Same symptoms...stay in a region for a while, do stuff, cam around. Then try to tp away and the UI freezes.

I've discovered a new bug, too. Sometimes the cursor gets stuck in the IM window. Hitting ESC doesn't take it back to the main UI. ALT+mouse click on an object doesn't switch the focus, either. I finally managed it by clicking on the Chat History window first, then was able to change the focus back to the main UI

I've never encountered those two...it's amazing how many different bugs SL can create!
