Windlight makes avatars look cheap

Greetings

I checked the windlight thing, I really love it, I know it has some bugs... but wow, beautiful! I love the options, choices and all the powerful editor! But the sad part is my avatar turned out really ugly like Ugly Betty or "Ruth" (bumps, "wrinkle" mesh like add 20 years older), very dark around the eyes, etc... on a very bright day. My friend Caliah and I tried to use sphere and set it light as to use them for our faces called "facelight", attached our head and move it in different position (tried huge sphere/small sphere, full bright, you name it!), also tried 3 more tiny spheres, etc.. to see if any our face turned out *smooth" like before but nothing work. We stay ugly like that. That is not normal.

When I turned Atmosphere Shaders off, I look okay... there's tiny wrinkle on lower cheek (near lips), a bit odd and also the sad part is there is no cloud, no specail river. Bah!

I was thinking. The beautiful outdoor or lovely avatar. I rather to see my avatar to be clean and smooth as lovely, so I uninstall windlight. Sorry.

Maybe they will fix the problem.

Hopefully,
Xia

Feeling your pain Xia, I notice the same thing and not thrilled,

Tried some of the same things as you and not fam really w/ the WL settings.
So? whatever you do, who knows how others visually get to view you now?

Exactly! That's what I told my friend about it, lol. They will always see us in their other view (windlight). There is no way to fix that. We will always look the same to them. I mean, we were trying to fix the problem for others to see us the same way as we see our faces like that. We did try everything on left and right.

Oh well.

One day I'm sure they will fix it. Maybe avatars needs update.

It's not Windlight. You just need to stop dressing like Britney. :p

I feel your pain too Xia. Besides all the things you mention, it's impossible to make dramatic use of colour now (goodbye goths!) because you can't accurately predict colours when they're influenced by light in this way.

Local lighting didn't work for me correctly in Windlight. As you have said, the avatar looks old with dark circles under the eyes. Also, everything other than the Linden water and sky kind of looks overly saturated with color like some kind of cheap video game. I think Windlight is more emphasis on the Linden provided parts of the sim, such as the land, water, and sky.

Lets hope they can update the avatars prior to production roll of the WindLight viewer:

Higher Poly Avatars
More animation points (fingers, toes, spine, stomach)
Updated default animations (it's not 1999 anymore).

Well I don't think the problems we've been seeing are fundamental issues with Windlight, but just signs that the default settings haven't been properly balanced yet. The current default lighting is anything but subtle. I took one look at those customization controls and ran screaming. Too many inscrutable sliders for me! I'll leave the balancing to the experts.

There's not enough ambient light. The shadows on our avatars are simply too dark. They don't make up for the fact that there is light coming from sources other than the sun. And I'm not talking about local light sources in the game but from a real world perspective when someone is standing outside in the noonday sun they don't look like they are being lit by a single bulb in a dark room. That's why our avvies look bad.

So windlight is going to be a perm future feature?
I'm over it! "ooo! ahhh ...pretty views...Don't look at me!"
I'm going back to my Nicholaz viewer or hiding in a wolf avie in a sandbox!
yaya I'm narci, but besides creating, pretty makes SL go 'round too.

*thinks about how our skins have become a thing of the past like non flexy hair
& waits for the windlight new skins to hit the market*

Thanks for your input Bree :)

I'm happy with thye way I look in WindLight so far. The 'modelling' effect of low afternoon light is very good - mid-day light about the same as before.

One thing: Is texture baking so important now that Windlight has arrived? Now that shadows are being cast by light, doesn't that cause a conflict with shadows we bake (or photoshop) onto our textures?

Perhaps that explains why some textures look so bad compared to others.

It's probably a better idea to post your comments on the jira issue: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3125

Right now I think most of the blame can be put on the current presets

Alternative daylight cycle settings
11-18-2007 03:17
Schnook is right, the presets used in the daylight cycle are, plainly spoken, rubbish regarding avatar lighting.

That is why I took each daytime setting and increased the ambient intensity while lowering the sun's intensity.

I made my settings available for download here:
http://www.file-upload.net/download-494513/Shellis_Windlight_settings.zip.html
Unpack the zip file and copy the contents into the "SecondLifeWindLight\app_settings\windlight" folder.

Please make a backup copy of the file SecondLifeWindLight\app_settings\windlight\days\Default.xml before you do this. This contains the default sky settings for each time of day.

Enjoy!

Yup....I noticed that too...... and I also discovered that since Windlight tends to wash out the skin color and create shading where we don't want it..... the very tan skins look the best. I use a face illumination.....and it dosn't really help with all the fair skins I have (which I do prefer) but....in Windlight....if I use very tan skin...and the face glow....my avitar looks worlds better~!!!

Avatars, Land and Object Tints Need Fixing
11-20-2007 11:40
I love WindLight skies and water. Everything else is a problem, though. The tints are too much. Avatars are sooo ugly now and face lamps do not help.

I assume and trust that these things will be fixed. I look at people and objects more than scenery. Would be nicer if the people and objects stayed the same with very little or no change.

Thank you so much.....these settings make a substantial difference to the apeaarnce of the AV.
In fact it emboldens me to say that LL may get the settings right before this goes Prime-Time.

Although it might not be a Linden who actually discovers the ideal settings........coughs.

That's quite true for me in full daylight (mid day). Full daylight in Windlight is simply too harsh compared to the current non-Windlight client.

Other times of the day seem acceptable so far...still evaluating...and comparing...
