57679 unable to login, but 57575 works

The client sits at "Veryfing SL protocol" for about one minute, then aborts with a little window which says:

Unable to connect to Second Life
The system may be down.
Please try again in a few minutes, or click Help
for advice and a link to the system status web page.

I have tried uninstalling all copies of SL, as well as deleting the files in "Documents and Settings".

CPU: AMD (1464 Mhz)
Memory: 1536 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 7600 GS/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
OpenGL Version: 2.0.3


Is anyone else having this problem?

I uploaded the latest first look viewer today and was able to connect and use the system normally (whatever that means these days !)

I went thru this Monday night. i submitted a report to support.
