Maybe I was being too cryptic or maybe I'm too dense to know what "What?" means. =)

But the RC version released today supports skin switching. So now via Preferences one can select the Classic dark SL skin, or the new bright Dazzle skin.

Now, if I could just hide the Flycam text...

We've always had skins and the ability to change them, at least after the days of the primitar.

:p

I think skins is a misleading name, it should really be called themes or something to distinguish it from the avatar skin. But I'm glad I can switch, but now that I can, I haven't, I'm using the bright Dazzle skin =S

For me, skins...themes...the terms both work for me because
I've seen them used interchangeably over the years.

But after giving your comment some thought, I would strongly agree
with you. Linden Lab should consider chosing "Themes", as in
"chose a different theme", "there will be a pull-down (or drop-down
as you might prefer) of themes"...etc. for the proper term to be
reflected in the Preferences.

"Chose a different skin" would certainly be ambiguous in SL since
skin usually refers to an Avatars skin texture.

So, yes, Linden Lab, we know you listen..."Themes", not "Skins".

And again...I'm stoked!

/me giggles... Yeah... Some of us are the Winamp generation though. UI themes are skins and skins are themes. Now, add the avatar skin (which really uses the tattoo layer for 99.9% of skins now) and you get a "what the heck are you talking about this time?" reaction. (^_^)

BTW.... I'm beyond happy to have to old UI back! \(^_^)/

Well, I understand the term confusion this could make but I know why its skin not a theme. A theme is a change in the layout of the said UI, a skin is a "look" of the theme, ie: color sets for a given theme. So if SL will allow custom theming of the UI then I say call it Skins, but if the will not allow changing of the UI then drop the work Skin for the word Theme, just to clear it up. What do you all think??

I think my brain just melted a bit. (>_<;) S'okay, we'll probably coin and meme it to death before something gets settled on. (=_=)y

It was a joke about the use of the word skin being used to mean two different things, not a comment about how we've been able to sneakily modify the appearance of the UI by editing files.

ooOOoo don't ya just love tweaking under the hood?

For once, I have moved over to the new RC Client... why? Simple, It now isnt distracting, taking center stage as the viewer squints to see what has been typed, the lack of real contrast. The 'art' of a well presented client, is the functionality, without grabbing focus/attention to what is going on. Some of the role playing beat em up platforms of the bad old days, used to leave you with about 25% of viewable screen, it felt remeniscent of those days when I used the Dazzle and subsequent clients, until now.

I still cannot figue out the logic of hiding the Tools menu until you actually edit something... not like it is saving computations or anything, quite the opposite in fact, the client has to rearrange the menu and would use a 'listening' function for that interaction.. and for what?

Yeah, in the end LL listened to the community. You catch such event as often as a sun eclipse but well... They will also be adding full skinning support I was told, so people will be able to make their own skins now and we will be able to customize our client the way we want... can't wait to see that in too :)
