Giant Black Ring

Lately, whenever I login to the SL windlight viewer there is an enormous black ring that surrounds me. It's not wrapped around me or anything, but imagine a large ring about 1/2 mile in diameter that follows you everywhere. The ring is even reflected on the water. It seems to be a client side distortion of some kind but I don't know what to do to get rid of it.

I'm on a macbook pro with 2Ghz processor, 256mb grahpics card running Tiger. Also, windlight seems really, really laggy. Others with similar hardware report decent performance . Are there any settings I can tweak?

In your preferences, open the custom preferences and move the "Sky Detail" slider down one notch. It's a known bug in this version of Windlight First Look, and on the highest settings makes a really annoying black bullseye in the sky!

Yeah that worked for me to, thanks for the tip. I found that I can move it either way and I will get more/less rings or no ring, I just have to play with that setting.

You both might want to go and read the comments/release notes in the blog post about the latest WL viewer-it was explained there as well, along with any other changes etc. ;)

You will find there are about 3 'notches' on that slider where the black rings dissapear, its relevant to texture timings with your GC.

UpdateCull and RenderSync both have a higher loading pipeline in the windlight client and both add to the apparent lag. Sculpties are similar to movie media in that they refresh at around 12.5-15fps, rendering movies at around 22-25fps will not create a additve affect load on the client, as they will synconise and interpolate. I posted this fact some time ago, when I discovered the corilation.

Turning off Atmospheric Shaders will lessen the client load quite considerably, for those on lower spec machines, also click the Hardware button and make sure VBO and filters are unchecked, will make a difference.

Windlight works on many levels. The atmospheric shaders are for more realistic, albiet dumbed down, form of raytracing effects, basic shaders can still be used should your GC not be able to handle the additional load.

/me has no probs running WL with all the settings on max(apart from droping down one notch to get rid of the bullseye). When they brought in the smoking ban I stoped going out to pubs and have lots more money to spend on my puter as a result.
