Actually, I don't know what it's actually doing, but it crashes while displaying the progress bar and the message "pre-caching." I haven't been able to see anything. I have Forceware 93.71 running on a GeForce 6200. I've tried disabling things like bump map and shiny and I use the standard color chooser. 12 tries, 12 crashes, with a log of the crash sent each time.
No one else seems to be crashing, judging from this Forum. I've never experienced a viewer crash like this in the 3+ years I've been in SL, through 3 graphics cards and I don't know how many new versions of Forceware. As Edward G. Robinson said at the end of "Little Caesar": "Can this be the end of Rico?"
Oh, and the font tags seem to be totally dead. Oh, Just saw Torley's sticky at the top.

I went through a an hour where I crashed a lot but I found if when I got inworld and I waited to rez first, the crashing stopped. It seemed to be triggered by flying high and having to rez the ground.
Using the default color picker has seemed to solve a lot for me at this point but time will tell.

Turn off the Vertex Shader until in-world
05-30-2007 12:13
Dell Dimension 4400 CPU: Intel P4 Northwood 2.8GHz Main Memory: 1 Gigabyte OS: XP SP2 Graphics Card: BFG GeForce 6200OC w/ 256Meg Forceware: 93.71
Well, starting the session with the Vertex shader turned off seems to be the key. I can start up the FLV, log-in and wait until fully rezzed in world, then turn on the Vertex shader and all works, normally. So, on a guess, I'd say it has to do with the order in which things are loaded by the client. The order the jobs or settings which it gives to the graphics card seem to be important.
Workaround: start with the vertex shader off, turn it on after one is in world.
Now, I have to find out if there's a JIRA about the lousy water ripple (the loss of some of the textures that make the water ripple look so good normally), the poor way in which the water level ground texture is baked (it's fuzzy, whereas other elevations are sharp), and finally, the total lack of a ground texture if one changes to low detail for the ground.
