I wonder if anyone else is getting this too. The normal SL client will load in an instant and come up to the login screen but it takes 2 to 5 minutes for me to load the First Look client. The only time it does load instantly is after I do an update for the FL client.
Specs as followed AMD Athlon64 (1st Gen) +3400 S754 MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce 3 250GB 1GB Kingston DDR4000 ATI X800 XT Platinum Edition AGP 256MB GDDR3

I'm having the same issue - takes quite a while for the client to load and get to the login screen. Seems like the client is reading a lot of data from the harddrive. Maybe it is reading or clearing the cache (just a guess).
Once it has started, the client seems fine.

There have been other threads about it taking a long time to discover the system specs. I think there's an option to have it not do this every time it starts, maybe under Preferences - maybe look around for that?

I was getting this after running the test at First Look Isle. I assumed it was from uninstalling & reinstalling both the main viewer and FL. I defragged and went back to speedy loads.
Also, a cache clear has worked as well, but the defrag did the best job so far.

Apparently between the FL builds, the way the client handles the cache was changed. After clearing it, the load time went from 2 to 5 minutes to instanteous startup.

http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/07/first-look-update-113357787-available/#more-754First Look 1.13.3.57787, at least, has this in its release notes: "* This release will clear the cache on startup to eliminate potentially corrupt caches" I do not know if this is still true... When I ran the First Look client the first time this boot of Windows, it did access the hard drive for a minute, but didn't appear to clear the cache (there are still plenty of files in the directory and subdirectories). If I run it again, without rebooting, it will load rather quickly without all the hard drive accessing. Hmm.

Is it possible that what they did is added a "cache made by version X" tag to the cache so it only needs to do a simple check instead of completely erasing possibly useful data?

Even after clearing the cache I still had incredibly long start up times of sometimes 5-10 minutes, if it didn't give me a "not reacting" message before it shut down. I finally gave up deleted First Look.

With McAfee AV running, I was getting 3 minutes load time, but with it turned off during the First Look Viewers loading, it went back to a more normal 30 seconds. The current 58185 version has fixed this problem, it seems.
