I was just getting used to 1.20.7, which seemed to be working OK. When I came to do the RC update to 1.20.8, as soon as the updater download panel appeared, a message popped up saing updater had failed. I trird several times, each with same result. i've never seen that particular fault before.

I'm not sure which updater you are using, but I'm just downloading in Firefox and am getting speeds of 30KB/sec. What previously took a minute or less to download is now taking over 10. Perhaps the updater makes assumptions about how long the download should take and fails if it takes too long (and yes, I've tested other sites which are responding at the 7Mbps speed expected).

The auto-update that happens when it tells you about a required download stops if it gets too slow.
Mine failed because of that, so I just downloaded from the website and installed directly. No idea how long the DL took, I made a sammich >.>

I got the updater to work normally on the other, better comp. Then on the usual computer I managed to download RC 1.20.8 by downloading from website rather than using updater. Problem solved!
