well, its amusing, because my older system sees the clouds, but my newer one doesn't! system is running Windows Vista 32 bit, NVIDIA 7300SE, Pentium D Dual Core, 1 gig ram, latest drivers from May 2 the clouds are not there, and the sky just cycles over and over light to dark. If I play with the cloud controls to make the cloud layer thicker, the sky just turns pitch black. list of other things I see wrong - Local lighting is not working properly - very dim. shiny doesn't have any specular highlight anymore - just reflects the sky giving it an unnatural "glowing" and dull look. The water does have specularity, so I think it fixable. fullbright eyes water glows at night Overall this is a great viewer - but its got flaws

Just double checking-you DID switch on vertex shading in Preferences? Because with some people, it isn't switched on by default.

They've state in the blog they'll be adding them back in at some point. Something windlight does called "Nimbus". They even mentioned see the shadows from the clouds on the ground.

I have two video cards on two systems. One is a 256mb card with SM2.0 (shader model 2.0) support and the other is a 512mb card with SM3.0 support. Switching my video ram amount on SL's prefference doesn't seem to affect the sky. I get clouds on the SM3.0 card but not the SM2.0 card. This leads me to believe that you need SM3.0. So theoretically your nVidia 7000 series card should work, as anything from 6000 series and up is SM3 or SM4. Unless of course it's an nVidia 6200, which has the distinction of being the only SM3 card I'm aware of that lacks the ability to perform FPU operations on shaders. The pipeline on SL is FPU so you definitely need FPU operations on your card.

I think Shader Model 4 is only on the 8800 series (8500 & 8600 too)?

Yep i am running Vista with the latest drivers and i get no clouds and a flickering sky that rotates between day and night every 30 seconds or so.
When i turned off clouds it stopped flickering it seemed i didn't get a flicker for 5 minutes or so, but as soon as i turned it on again the flickering returned. From the rest of the posts i read it seems it is an issue directly related to vista. Some people have mentioned rolling back to the 97 something drivers works for them, but for some of us that isn't option. I am unable to play other games without serious issues on that older driver.
More and more machines are getting vista these day's i wish LL would start doing something and start supporting vista more or start doing some better testing on it.

From: camilla Yosuke on my laptop, NVIDIA go 7600, linux mandriva 2007 latest nvidia driver 100.14.06 doesn't show clouds while older 9746 does I think you're onto something there. I'm using a NVIDIA 7600 GS on my XP system which doesn't use the latest drivers, and I have clouds. Latest drivers seem to take out the clouds on both XP and Vista, as far as I can tell. But as far as I can tell, this doesn't affect anything but those in the 7000 series of cards. I see people with my 7600 with this issue - whereas my 7600 doesn't. Definitely NOT a card issue, and I suspect, not a Vista issue either - but a NVIDIA driver issue.

It doesn't really have anything to do on Vista because WindLight works fine on Vista for me. And for whatever reason SL actually runs better and faster for me in Vista than in XP.

From: Kevin Susenko It doesn't really have anything to do on Vista because WindLight works fine on Vista for me. And for whatever reason SL actually runs better and faster for me in Vista than in XP. that's because it's an OpenGL issue, and not a Vista issue. You are probably using an older driver, or your card, as its not a 7xxx series card, may not be affected. Windows XP Pro is affected by the bug too, and the fix is to roll back the OpenGL version. Vista users using OpenGL 2.1.0 see the clouds just fine. I wish I could find where I could get that, because its sure not on the NVidia site. OpenGL 2.1.1 with a 7xxx series card DOES NOT WORK Those who are affected by this bug - be they on XP or Vista (and possibly Linux is affected too) please vote! https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-911
