Windlight & Draw Distance... not friends

Okay, I don't have the fastest computer in the world, nor do I have the most RAM. I know these things, and I adjust my game settings accordingly.

SL 1.16 and before contained a setting called "fog" whereby, items nearing your draw distance would become hazy, and eventually those which did not render at all, appeared to be obscured by that fog. It wasn't a perfect system, but it made some semblance of sense.

Now, of course, the clear, bright, vibrant skies, huge sun (and I do mean FREAKING HUGE this time), the lighting, the shading, the great atmostpheric effects... they're all wonderful.

but at 400m in the sky, I can see the sky, the "horizon plane (it's kinda grey blue) and below me, a square of water. As I fall, the land eventually renders there, as do the objects around me. But they just "pop in" not really making the experience very pleasant.

I don't want to jack my draw distance up, because a, my computer can't handle it, and b.. my brain can't handle seeing a whole sandbox sim at once... and yet at the same time, I don't REALLY want to live on a foggy street corner in some Film Noir. (okay, maybe I need to rethink that, cause that would be kinda cool)

Basically, I don't want my world bathed in realistic pea soup london fog.. I just want the items that are vanishing or appearing on the edges of my draw distance to look less... obvious.

Help?

World->Sky Settings.

Reduce the haze horizon and haze density sliders to 0, they apparently override the old value

For me this didn't work. In fact, for me these settings don't seem to do anything.

Put a Checkmark in the CUSTOM Box.

And I hope everyone gets used to seeing water, water everywhere with Windlight because that hard-Draw Keying-Limit problem has been with WL since its beginning.

It is shocking to see that the ONE SL Viewer, in which the sole reason for its existence is to concentrate all the author's effort at providing the most 'realistic' viewing experience in SL... winds up with the most artificially-reproduced virtual landscape in all of nature.

Yeah it's freaking UGLY seeing terrain just hard cut in a patchwork pattern in the distance, but Seeing as how it's been that way for months there seems to be little hope of fixing it now :(

The atmospheric sliders do not do the job because they also limit your draw distance to the sky which you do NOT want most all the time. The fog ratio very specifically took care of the very specific problem of hiding the UGLY hard cull at your max draw distance.

I agree that the "Fog Ratio" should be reinstated, possibly by choice.

You can change the size of the sun in the environment editor. It doesn't have to be huge although I think it defaults back to huge when you update.

Hey all this WL is nice and all but know what..... way to many settings and options for someone who just wants to come online after work, get some building done and enjoy Sl as he always did.. now I spend half the evening checking out all the pre-sets and pushing sliders around and wondering why notecards and stuff freeze all over my screen only to go back to dazzle for now after 4 hours on- and off in 1.19.1... DOH :o

I'm having trouble with "build distance." Why is the distance at which I can select things some paltry small distance, no matter how high I set my draw distance? It also just let's go of an object if I pull it outside of this ridiculously small distance. That's not a big deal for 1 object, but it's a huge pain in the ass when moving a multi-piece assembly!

I so agree. And I also think it would be really really nice if everyone in SL saw approximately the same world.

Frankly at this point I've given up on questions of whether that world, and particularly the avatars in it, are beautiful or ugly. I'd just like them to look *about* the same to everyone, when they are viewing at the same time-of-day.

And I'd like to not need a freaking manual to setup my viewer.
