Hi Folks,

I'm developing a project plan for my employer to purchase a region in SL and I'm beginning to get a bit nervous because the FirstLook client has not run on my work computer since the middle of january. I've dl'd each release and some get a bit further than others, but all crash and call the SL crash logger.

Is there a systems requirement or troubleshooting page for the FirstLook client? Or perhaps there is a log file on my client where I can see what might be causing this.

The FL client is actually running well on my home computer which is much older and less powerful than the work machine.

As I said, I'm getting nervous that FL will be released and I won't be able to continue our project.

thanks for any and all tips!

your computer specs would help. also make sure you are using up to date video driver.

Thanks Element,

My FL crashes are happening on this system:

HP Laptop
Windows XP Pro SP2
1.99 Ghz - 1.GB of RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon X300

I also did find a log in the Documents and Settings folder for Second Life which is obviously shared with the release version of the client (ie. official and firstlook clients overwrite the same file).

It looks to me like FirstLook is crashing when initializing audio - here is the last line written in the log file:

"2007-03-19T21:08:27Z INFO: LLAudioEngine_FMOD::init() initializing FMOD"

Anyone else seen this? The laptop audio is listed as "SoundMAX" in Device Manager.

have you gone to the hp site and updated your sound and video drivers?
laptop vendors are notorious for lagging behind in video driver support. If their driver is old you can try one from here, they are modded to install on mostly everything: http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php or here: http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=9 but try at your own risk. its what i had to do to get get sl cranking on my old dell inspiron 8600.

Element, you're totally spot-on. Since this is a work machine I'd hoped that drivers were patched with the regular updates. Alas, no. I did find the updates and FL is working great. Thanks for your insistence!

For all you Radeon x300/x550 users out there.
Here is an updated driver that works with SL.
I've used it myself after crashing with the original Radeon driver that came with my Dell Dimension 4700.

GET JUST THE DRIVER ONLY. 9.8 MB.

DO NOT USE THE WHOLE CATALYST SUITE.

http://ati.de/support/drivers/xp/radeonx-xp.html

All you need is the driver

Since installing that driver I've had no problem with my Radeon X300

Hope this helps.
