Any ETA for Linux voice client yet?

Is there any chance we Linux users will get a voice client before it's out of First Look and into the main viewer? Or even WHEN it's put into the main viewer? Or... ever?

I've been chasing it up internally but basically we're still waiting for a Linux binary blob (yuck!) from our vendor - the viewer part of the code is ready and waiting. I'm assured it will happen."
Is this still what's holding things up?

I'd like one too. I hate using Microsoft products and it's a pain to switch from Ubuntu just to use Voice... it's a feature that I'd really like to use.

Linux Client?
07-15-2007 02:03
As one of the bastard stepchildren of Beelzebub (a Linux user) I wonder if we could get an update on this project. It seems the latest word from a Linden about this was over six months ago and the last posting here was a month ago.

There are people actually using voice in group conversations that I and others would like to participate in. It's annoying to them to constantly have to translate for those of us who can't get the same software, and humiliating for us to not be able to get it.

Is it truly that much more difficult to write a Linux client than billyware or mac? Or, is it just that we don't have enough priority? Inquiring Avatars want to know.

Thank you (in advance)

This is what Jeska Linden said on the JIRA on March 20th:

I've checked on this and we are not currently planning on having a Linux voice beta client for testing. More information when it's available.

So it seems the current ETA would be never.

But does "Not for testing" mean one will eventually be released as a main client without any kind of user testing?

What is the holdup here? Is Vivox simply not capable of porting their code to Linux?

It seems to me there should be some way for Linden Labs to light a fire under Vivox to deliver this "blob" I keep hearing about. People are actually using this feature on a regular basis and I am getting tired of having to explain that I can't get it because I use Linux.

It should not have been rolled out into the main grid before being made available to ALL residents.

Is there any way to get an update from Vivox? It looks like they're the roadblock.
