is there a reason for this? I realize it's much smoother, and runs better... but how can a client that uses up that much memory go live, i nearly had a heart attack when i saw it... that's just pure insanity when the average user has 512M of ram, some 1G... which leaves the rest to be from hard disk which is going to cause major performance issue's.

well if your computer has enough ram, why not using it , i don't see any wrong in that.

I tested the viewer in a busy club last week.

It topped out at about 1.1 GB. That is a big chunk of memory to use. I have professional 3D modelling software and analysis programs that use less than that...

Luckily I have 2 GB memory.

Amount of people/prim textures ~> ram use <~ whats to wonder?

Go to a clean sim, watch how little you need, go next to a crowd with stuff on them, watch it swell, better yet open map, zoom in out in out in out, ram use go up, wonder why -.o , this is nothing like old map was, it rendered everything ...tried to, and ram use could explode to 2gig+ cause of it, and SL would just crawl :P

Most games that come out uses higher resolution then before and ram req is abselute 1 gig for them, hurms, i wouldnt go near like.. Vanguard without least 2gig ram (unreal 2.xx) it will eat 1 gig ram like nothing , why?, high res textures on alot of the things you see,.

Just wait till dx10 gets going 320/640ram vid card will be min, expect 4gig ram to become standard to.

<512 ram way behind , min for pc's now are definatly 1gig if you plan on playing/creating things, id say 2gig, cause 1 gig (2x512) is a waste to buy

I don't really see that being the point. I don't know about most people but while I'm SL I'm not ONLY in SL. I also web browse, play music, watch youtube, or play a smaller game in the background. I have enough ram to handle that so I'm not complaining. However, if this person's SL is using up all that ram and they only have about 2GB to spare, thats a hefty load for 1 program to be using. My other games take up way less then that. I understand the point of having more ram means that you can use more things, but things like SL shouldn't use that much unless your rendering about 9 sims worth of textures and builds..

Having played vanguard myself during it's beta stages i couldn't agree with you more lol. Talk about a load.

the 1.3gigs is an empty sim.. a private sim, 4 houses total on it, and only myself and one other on the island... just checked again before replying to this and 1.34 is currently in use.

yes the newer games need more, but there is a huge diffrence between second life, and vanguard.... if secondlife looked as good as vanguard i'd have no problems :P but it dosn't,, it dosn't look any diffrent now then when I first started playing SL in '05 and the client used 3-400M max.

as for 512M way behind, i build systems for a living.... 90% of the systems i build every day still have 512M of ram, it's all people ask for when purchasing, so no.... it's not way behind. (my own system has 3.5 ... max 32bit os will take)

Wich sim is this in SL btw, i tend to snoop around in random sim.

Think SL has about 4.000.000 times more textures then Vanguard tho and none optimized n.n (would love to see LL give some stats about their servers sometime :P)

Remember SL texture sizes even beats 90% of Vanguard size as they are optimized and rarly ever use 2048x2048, was in alpha&beta so they had uncomprimized textures so i could pretty much see them all and how big they where size/mb (thank you very much 17gig install)

I build pc's to, (last 14 years) and i wouldnt recommend 512 to anyone, thats about 7 years behind for me, pc's need 2 identical ram to start = 2x256 wich is really a huge ripoff, tho its their own fault if they dont want 2x512 :p the price diffrence is tiny, performance alot better.

2 identical? only if you want dual channel, and for 80% of people out there they don't require or desire to spend the extra to gain an extra 2ms on ram access. even some gamers who are putting together 2-3000 dollar computers end up putting in 3 1 gig sticks not caring about dual channel but wanting the last slot open for when vista64 is stable enough and supported enough to use more then 3.

XP 64 bit supports up to 128 GB of ram. There is a machine out there that has that much (I wants it, yes my precious, the $30,000 workstation) and I doubt it does that in 3 slots.
I see the point though. ;)

I ment more driver and software wise as supported enough :P sorry for not being clearer... 64 home basic is 8gigs, 64 home premium is 16 and the rest 128.... 128GB... man that would be sweet lol
