is there a limit on how many prims you can link together?. im building a boat in sandbox and it wont link it together, either saying too many prims or too far away to link. the boat i'll be about 100 prims.

Maximum number of prims in a nonphysical object is 256.
Maximum number of prims in a physical object is 31 or 32, but the 'driver' and 'passengers' are included in that count.
Maximum distance (centre to centre) of furthest-apart prims is 30 meters.
So an object that's 50 meters long (five 10x10 prims) is too big to link. Your 100 prim boat, if physical, is too many prims. If the middle of the prim at the tip of the bow is more than 30 meters from the middle of the prim at the back of the stern, it's too far apart to link.

the link limit is like 255 prims.. (roughly).. but the error you're having is more related to the distance BETWEEN CENTERS.. you're limited to approximately 32m. There's some play in this system (both ways unfortunately).. but basically, your boat is too big.

Thanks for your help guys. I managed to get it all linked eventually. maybe a problem with game? also when i was clicking link it was unlinking instead (sometimes).
Also do you know if theres a way to measure the size of the boat and if yes how do i do it?

if you search, you will find the details of the Too-big-to-link algorithm. Suffice to say that it is a really complex algorithm that is related to the complicated calculations that 3D-graphics software have to deal with.
The simple version is, centers within about 30 meters, but as I say, that is just approximate. The *size* and the *link order* also come into play in annoying ways (but for good technical reasons).

Size of the items matters as to the overall link size too. you can link 4 10m cubes together but at the same distance overall 5 m cubes are too far apart

From: Wavie Haller is there a limit on how many prims you can link together?. im building a boat in sandbox and it wont link it together, either saying too many prims or too far away to link. the boat i'll be about 100 prims. when i get the message to far apart i take the easy route. shrink link and then expand....for some reason it's always worked for me and you get everything done without having to worry about resizing. i assume if it works for me will work for you to no?
