I was thrown off the grid by some bug, and when I try to log on, I get:

"Error: Despite our best efforts, something has gone wrong"

I've done a full reboot/clear/re-install of Second Life, but nothing seems to help.

Anyone know what this error actually means?

Have you tried logging in at a different location? In Preferences, General - use the drop-down menu or tick the box under it for the box to show on your log-in screen.

Drat - let's see, what else could help... I'm not knowledgeable but at least I'm here :-D

It could be a problem with your internet connection, I suppose.

Firewall settings?

You said you did a "full reboot/clear/re-install".

Did that involve un-installing Second Life? Some folks have troubles that arent' fixed by just clearing the cache and installing over top of the current install, but are fixed by doing an uninstall before re-installing.

I have ZoneAlarm, I turned it off to check... still the same. Everything else, IRC, web, etc, works fine.

Thanks for the ideas though. I suspect some prescence/login thing is out of date, and it think I'm already logged in. Grr.

Rebooted, cleared the cache, restarted SL, rebooted, uninstalled, manually deleted everything else left over, rebooted, reinstalled, still the same. I'm out of ideas now. :)

If I had to guess, I'd say maybe when you crashed, the system didn't log you out properly and it thinks you're still online. Therefore, when you try to log in again, it fails.

Wait about a half hour or so and see if it clears up. That should give your account enough time to "idle out".

If you still can't get in later, there goes my theory. Good luck.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. It's been 3 hours since I first posted, I'm going to wait for tomorrow now.

I do my best.

I am currently writing my scripts... in notepad.exe. It's lag free and nobody interrupts me! :)

Plus it doesn't do that whacky unindent thing.

Well, it's tomorrow now, and I still can't log in as Mat Warf.

I created and logged a freebie alt character in, so it's DEFINITELY not something on this end.

No reply to my support email yet. How long does it take before emails get looked at?

It's a weekend, so I'd guess it would be looked at on Monday. This isn't to say that Linden Labs doesn't have weekend support, but I suspect they are mainly there to keep the grid running and don't deal much with individual user problems.

I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties, Mat- hopefully something gets resolved in your favour on Monday.

I would've suggested that but I thought you deleted all the old settings when you reinstalled. My guess would be it's something in the settings of the unloggable account that prevents you from logging in. You can compare, or I think if you ditch the settings file (in Documents and Settings/you/Application Data/Second Life it writes you a new one - but maybe someone else can say for sure.

Well, I didn't change anything overnight, and I can log in now.

Hopefully this won't be a regular thing. :P
