I apologize in advance for the nooby question; I did a search and couldn't find anything.
I'm trying to upload a picture to put in my profile. It's landscape oriented like the space in the profile is, but when I try to upload it, SL makes it square. Obviously it distorts the picture. So what am I doing wrong? How can I make SL keep the picture's dimensions?

SL converts all uploads to a format with each side having a whole power of 2 bits, usually turning a rectangle into a square. You are much better off in general making sure that you have your pic edited to have sides with even powers of 2 in your own software, before you load it into SL. That way you get better control.
The profile pic displays with and aspect ratio of 1.4. So, what I do is to edit a my profile pic to the 1.4 ratio, but then save it into a square format before uploading.
Looking at my current pic, I have a 1200 x 900 bitmap, but I saved that to a 256x256 tga file before uploading to SL. (I could also have saved as a 256 x 256 jpeg) The 256 x 256 is distorted on my PC, but displays fine in the profile picture window.
Hope this helps
