I hardly spent anytime in SL this summer (its summer for most of us)
SL was a boomtown late last year (Oct 2006-March 2007)
Q-
Did you think SL will pick up this Autumn and Winter as was the case late last year ?

Well, you have to keep in mind that last autumn SecondLife was subject to a lot of real life media attention, which would of course encourage people who had never heard of it to give it a try. I don't think the same is going to necessarily be true this year. We me see some upturn in numbers, but not nearly of the scale seen last October.

I think the media machine, as well as membership, will naturally rev up once again come Autumn, after all SL is an activity for those long blah months of October to March, where most of us spend much more time indoors.

Yep yep on that yep. My records show that - for all the hubub about the gambling ban and the land glut, sales have not dropped off this summer any more than they did last summer. Yep. =^.^=

well I would say that a great portion of the sl base like in any other community is living in the northern hemisphere not the southern one (one day that may change but not as of yet ) so since its like warm and summer like most places we are all out taking holidays and walking around barefoot on the beaches etc ^^
Traffic drops on the interent in the summer and has done this historically it will be no different in second life I dont think. Usually the traffic gets so much higher in september/october that things break as a result netwise as ISP's compensate for the sudden increase in load. So well if they aren't surfing the net then often they probably aren't playing games or wandering around virtual worlds either and for most of the same reasons (holidays )

I haven't been hooked up to Real Life so much this summer! My RL 'agent' is going on holiday soon so I can expect to be left in peace at some secret location in a far off corner of the grid sunning myself on an empty beach in my birthday suit! Nobody will be getting me to build things, nobody will be getting me to jetpack around new sims in Corsica, nobody will be getting me to tire myself out at laggy danceclubs and say 'woot' in an ironical way. Woot - peace at last - until September! But as it's costing RL $72 per year to keep me in SL I dare say I'll be called upon to earn my keep again in the autumn.

SL's lack of scalability is already showing. If they want more users they need to figure out how to scale. If we want SL to work half way decent we really do not want more people logging on anytime soon..... LL needs to get the grid code re-write happening they said they were working on months ago.
Let's hope LL can get scalable! The more people the better as long as things work.

Yep! They need to Scale Up and Scale Out! (networking terms) Actually I've spent my entire summer working or in front of the computer. I dont like anything past 72 degrees Farenheit.

Every online game/service slows in the summer, bar none. People just spend more time in front of their computers, generally speaking, in the winter when there are fewer hours of daylight and fewer reasons to go outdoors. It's common and happens in every online situation. Summer is the downtime, to be honest.

would a tiny portion of fall numbers' increase may be attributed to better internet connections at the university?
