Most of the trash crashes I have had occurred when I emptied trash right after I'd been moving things around in my inventory. If I empty it first thing after login, I *seem* to have better results. It *seems* to do better if I've been out dancing or exploring rather than filing and organizing right beforehand, too.
Not that we should have to find workarounds to empty our trash, but I share in hopes it helps somewhat until SL gets this bug fixed!

I also crash each time I empty trash, which is a lot since I am trying to keep my inventory under 10k. And yes, this has been going on for a few months now (too many). Still, dont you love SL???

This has happened to me for months - I'd say at least six months (though time is funny in SL). And I'm obsessive about cleaning up my inventory every couple of weeks, as I like to keep it to under 6k, which isn't easy when you are always building and buying stuff. It doesn't crash all the time, but occasionally. Someone once said that it has to do with when you put folders in the trash. OK, so now when I put folders in the trash, first I trash everything in the folder separately, then the folder itself, rather than just dragging the whole thing to the trash. Maybe just voodoo or the power of suggestion, but I'm pretty sure that has significantly reduced the number of crashes when emptying the trash. (I also warn whoever I'm with - "OK, I'm about the empty my trash now . . ." coco

Kinda sad when you know you are going to crash from an action in game. I get this one sometimes too though, it was really fun then day that I crashed and the trash did *not* empty and I had to do it again. 3 tries later and I just figured the trash man didnt want my crap anymore and gave up for the day

If I knew it was going to happen to me, I would wait and empty my trash when I was going to log out of SL. Oh my I don't want to log out I am having too much fun with my friens so I guess I will just empty my trash. hehe

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Vote for the JIRA issue if you haven't already! It's listed as a critical issue but, from what I understand, LL hasn't found a solid repro for it yet, which makes it difficult to narrow down what's causing it.

it's easy to repro.
If you dump your trash right after login, you can empty it with no problems, regardless of what is in the trash. Tp around a bit, and the chance of a crash increases.
If you delete a folder, then go to purge trash, the chance of a crash is around 100%. It's something about the folders. Whether they have contents or not is irrelevent. Purging of the objects themselves doesn't seem to have any effect; only the folders.
However, If the folder is already in the trash and you are deleting immediately after login, there is no problem.
I'ld like to say i figured this out, but someone else did and posted it here many months ago.

I've had lots of trash crashes, generally when I'd been manipulating inventory, but it's not consistent. Some people have it all the time, others rarely or never....I think what they're looking for are steps 1,2,3, which always lead to a crash, with every av they try. I don't think the folder aspect has been mentioned on the JIRA issue, though, so you might post it to the comments when you get a chance.
