I'm new to SL, and I just still don't seem to get it. I downloaded SL a long time ago, then uninstalled it because I didn't understand it. Two days ago I downloaded it again and tried to learn and get a grasp for it. I still just have a question if you guys wouldn't mind answering..
Are there any 'realistic' cities in SL that are actually populated. What I mean is for example.. Are there areas that have stores, houses, police stations, town halls. And stuff like that for like a real life role play? Pardon my ignorance, its just everything I see is all about SEX and GAMBLING. If not. Perhaps I just don't understand what SL really is?

Use search... have a look around - read forum or other forums.. search for Second Life at the net and you will find lots of nice blogs.. telling about nice special worth visit places.. Type in ”second life blogs” SL are a place where you must act by your own... not as WOW and other places.. we dont have levels.. its up to you to do what you want.... Good Luck - have a nice day.. and if you want and have stamina - you soon will have a Second Life! / EXAKT Tina (PetGirl) Bergman

Since SL can't satisfy all of my artistic needs, I tried to put my answer in rhyme form: There's a lot that can be done, at least if you're open-minded, in Second Life by anyone. So take a look and don't be blinded by the hookers and the gamble, all that sex and games of luck - leave the welcome area scramble, you don't need to spend a buck.
You can watch the furries sniffing at each others rearer parts, which is a prelude to yiffing, one of the finer furry arts. You may also want to inspect one of the gorean sims, where a slave is just an object to be tortured like the prims.
You can also visit schools to learn what ageplay is about, and no, it's not against the rules to wear some rompers; try it out! The Wikipedia helps translate the words you never heard before; a useful tool, at any rate, to make sense of dolcett and vore.
There are so many things to mention, just can't remember all the rest. I'm sure there's much that's worth attention, you will find out what you like best. So, venture out and meet the portly mid-aged trucker of your dreams; on the grid he's cute and courtly and member of the woman teams.Take this with a pinch of salt please I hope there's no need to post "this will not end well". To find out about other useful activities, you might want to have a look at this thread: /327/d6/141254/1.html

you might want to go check out dublin. It's a replica of the real Dublin in Ireland, complete with the river Liffey and a host of bars playing great irish music ( The Blarney Stone is well woth a look, evens sells 'Gwinness" , as well as houses ( Brownstones) and streets to amble along. And I'm sure you'll receive a very warm welcome from the residents too.

But be nice when class is in session, 'cuz some of us are tryin' to learn. I think I know what the original poster is asking, because sometimes areas are a little "chaotic" in layout. More looking for a real-world city with a populace and such. I see someone already suggested Dublin. I'd also suggest Nakama, which can be fairly alive sometimes. Heck, even Boardman might be a good option. That said, because people can teleport wherever they wish, areas don't always have a stable population. Mari

There are... but a lot of the places like that are for specific communities... Gor, Furry and Vampire spring to mind as the places with the clearest "cities" that function as communities in SL. There are other communities, a sci-fi one on it's way for example. For a lot of people SL isn't an RPG. There's aren't wildernesses, villages and cities like you might find elsewhere. There certainly isn't a recognised police force, although there are some places that have people who try to act as a police. Many of us treat them with deep suspicion and as griefers, many of us have good experiences too. If you pop in to some random sim you'll usually see a mix of building styles. You're seeing the mix of individual interests rubbing shoulders that is typical of SL. Sure there's friction, but by and large you get people with quite dissimilar interests living next to each other peacably. I used to live between a huge gothic vampire castle and an ultra-sci-fi themed spot, with a gay club on the other side, and past them a family complete with prim babies. We didn't necessarily see eye to eye about everything, but we all co-existed quite happily. Groups are a good way of finding people with similar interests to you. Search all isn't wonderful... but for some things like this, can be just what you need. Good luck with finding your feet!

If you fancy the victorian age, I'd recommend a visit to Caledon - seven sims by now, some areas are more town-like than others but all in all it's a good mix of residential and commercial builds. No gambling, no sex (well, at least not in public spaces ), always some friendly people to chat to and a great environment for 19th century roleplay.
