Could anyone tell me what a good dimension would be for a profile pic? I keep trying different sizes and they all come out looking squished in my profile. Thank you!

I think what you are supposed to use is 512x512.. Don't quote me on that one thoug, but it works for me.

I think the width needs to be 1.3 or 1.4 times the length of the height. SL will upload it at some multiple of 256px per side, but it stretches back out when you put it in the profile window.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I use 512x364 (or thereabouts) - you'll find out more on the photography section of the forums, which details all of SL's little quirks when it comes to uploading etc

Yeah any 4:3 ratio works well, common ones being 640x480, 512x384, 320x240. As Ann said it will be resized on upload and will look funny when you preview it or open the texture for viewing, but it gets stretched back out to look right again once you display it on your profile.

I suspect it was done this way so that unaltered screenshots taken on non-widescreen monitors will look right, albeit much larger than is actually needed.

So in order to have a picture in our profile, we need to use the File: Upload Image option and pay L$10?

I really bashed my furry head against the wall figuring out sizes for images.

At first one would think the following would be best (or their ratios):

Profile image - 1600 x 1200
Picks image - 1600 x 900
About Land image - 1600 x 1060
Classified Ads image - 1600 x 1130

HOWEVER, when someone creates a Pick from your land, your About Land image is used, so therefore it's in your best interest to use a 1600 x 900 image (not 1600 x 1060).

Much head scratching ensued as I wondered as to the inconsistencies.

Please correct me if I'm wrong in any of my speculations.

Yes. Or save, which cost 10L anyway and you can't do any cropping or other editing.

Up-Loading Artwork
07-05-2007 07:33
Hi All.

I Searched for an explanation on how to upload content from my hardrive with the intention of uploading a piece of classical art that I could decorate my walls with. Last night I visited several in-world galleries and while I did find one I wanted I had my heart set on some Alma Tadema that apparently no one has for sale. So - to cut of my ramblings - can anyone tell me how I can upload a piece into my inventory so I can display it on my walls? And would there by some sort of copyright infringement involved in doing so?

TIA for any and all help.

In teh menubar, select file/upload, and find it on your local hard drive. For graphics, tga, jpeg, and png are teh accepted file formats.

As for copyright infringement, you are very liekly to be violating copyright by uploading. That hasn't stopped a lot of people though. I'll leave it between you and your short-duration-personal-saviour (shur-dur-per-sav) whether or not you upload something that violates copyright. Many people get around this pesky copyright restriction by instead choosing to upload stuff that they actually own the copyright on.

From memory, I think there's issues uploading files that big.... and SL resizes the pic anyway when you drop it into the display box. All my uploads for use on profiles, picks etc I resize (in Photoshop) to 512x356 before uploading. The Photography forum has more on this - it's very helpful ... and no discussions on landbots, or activities of other AVs to whom I'm not related lol
