Instead of black on the alpha channel use gradients of grey. The darker the grey the more transparent it will be. Lot of work but that's the only way I can think of. Good luck.

Wait? So, greys are transparent? But...I have made gray textures before that weren't transparent... The tutorial I used to make alphas was: http://www.sluniverse.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10190 and according to that i just like...click "Make alpha mask"... <.<

Greys are only semi-transparent if you use them on the alpha channel.

What Rav said hehe. The darker the grey the more transparent but they have to be used in the alpha channel.

Oh, but then the Black on images is whats transparent...so...how does it gradiate to a black for shadows?
Im lost O.O Im hopeless...lol
Also, does that mean its impossible to make the opposite of shadows? like..beams of light since they are white/yellow?

Start with a dark grey (makes the shadow more transparent) and make the shadow a light grey or white to make it dark. I'm guessing the visible layer has to be black.

They're talking about the alpha channel. You can see what parts are GOING to be transparent in SL by looking at the alpha channel in Photoshop. You might want to consult the texture wizards down in Texturing tips. They help with these kinds of questions all the time. The answer is probably even stickied!

What I've done in the past is make that part of the texture black, and then erase it with the brush set to 50% opacity.
