Two avatar names required. Yourself and one other. No reason the second can't be your own alt, either.
Used to be three, and people complained that they and their Partner couldn't form a 2-person group to control shared assets without forming a menage a' trois with an alt or a third player to maintain the group.

If you own land, it even makes a lot of sense to form a land-owning group with your alt, because (1) you can get the benefit of the 10% group land allowance bonus and (2) with bigger land holdings you are able to manage tier payment in a more granular way than with a single land owner.

Officially 2, and an alt can be the other.
However - how many times has LL capriciously changed its mind? It may decide to make it 2 "real" people someday - or require everyone to be logged in once a month - so I personally woulnd't rest easy until there there were three different people who were consistantly online once a week, just to play it safe.

One is the minimum needed to start a group. The group will be disbanded if it doesn't get more members, but it only takes one to start it.
Although... the group could be started by a libsecondlife bot, in which case one might say that a group can be started by zero people. If the bot created group gets more members who are also bots then the group can stay in existence without having any human members.

From: Dnali Anabuki Granular way...don't understand what you mean but I feel intriqued. OK, let's do an example: Let's assume that you own 10,000 m² of land. If you own that yourself, as a single resident, you pay $75 per month tier fee for the 16,384 m² bracket. If you own that with an alt in a group, you pay $40 per month, and your group has a land ownership allowance of 10,137 m². Here you contribute (8192+512)*1.1 = 9574 m² and your alt contributes 512*1.1 = 563 m², which is free. This saving definitely pays for the monthly $6 which a premium alt costs you.

It did used to be three. The solution is simply to setup two alts and have them join the group (it can be setup with one, but is deleted after 48 hours, I think, if two more have not joined). As for it being 2 "real" people - how can LL know? So long as when you setup the alt you use a ficticious real-life name and a different email address to your main, then they can't possibly tell it's an alt.

Yeah ... this subject just pisses me off ...
You see, I'm starting an in-world business. I've spent weeks getting everything set up and ready for the grand opening this weekend. Monday, I set up the group for my new customers and (hopefully) employees. NOWHERE in-game did it warn me that I had 48 hours to get a 2nd member.
I got an e-mail (IM) the next day warning me that my group would be disbanded if I didn't get the minimum of 2 members. So I jumped in-world as soon as I got home and sent an IM to a friend of mine to get him to join the group. He logged in the next morning to join and the group was gone ... disbanded.
So I lost my L$100. LL won't refund it, even though they didn't advise me in-game of the 2-member minimum within 48 hours. I lost the group name, which was the same as my business name. LL said the group can not be reinstated, nor can the name be recycled but rather it is locked away forever, never to be able to be used again.
So I had to set up my group again, adding "~" to the end to be similar to the original name yet still able to be easily searched. I had to pay the L$100 again. And this time I *immediately* sent an IM to my friend and had him join.
So .. the lesson? Don't trust LL to tell you everything you need to know in-game. You *MUST* read the forums to learn. LL will not offer retribution or even an apology. "You should have read the web site before you created the group" Yeah ... big help there. Thanks LL. Thanks for nothing.
It's not the L$100 that bothers me ... it's the fact that I have forever lost the group name that exactly matches my business name. If I hadn't already spent tons of L$ to upload textures with my business name, or spent all that time putting together notecards that have my business name on it .. I would have just changed the name of the business.
So ... 2 member minimum and you *MUST* have them registered within 48 hours or else you lose it FOREVER.

You have 48 hours, starting from the time when the group has been created. In your case I'd register an alt and go join your own group.

You are lucky you only lost 100L with your group
If you HAD put your land in the group, and didnt get that 2nd member, and the group was disbanned, you would have lost ALL YOUR LAND that the group had in it.
Be thankfull it was only 100L you lost, thats only like 33 cents
