Nice easy direct question this one... Only land 'purchased' has tier fee value implications, land which has been paid to be 'reserved' causes no change to your tier fee value (at least not untill you finally buy it)..correct ?

No, you are just RESERVING the land, you have not purchased it. Besides, Island do not go towards your tier either. They are billed and stand alone from your mainland tier.

Thanks..I was pretty sure it had no effect, but just like many things in SL instruction..they aren't terribly clear..and in the land auction section where you bid to reserve land, as soon as you go to place a bid a warning message appears telling you the price you pay may effect your tier value (push it up to the next level)..so then you think..Uhoh!

Why do people reserve land? Is it in case you want to expand and therefore don't want someone to own that plot a couple of squares away from your island?

Elinah No. You can only reserve islands.

Yes..you may have plans for future expansion but don't want to commit to the cost of buying further islands at the present moment. You can therefore reserve the land for the purposes of that expansion and not have to worry about someone else buying the space around you thus preventing your grand 'master plan'.

Elinah I will leave SL if LL did allow RESERVATIONS of 512's on mainland without purchase. There is no point.

Not on the mainland, but private estate owners (like Anshe Chung) have done it for some time. Useful because, if you see a plot you like but can't get the required funds for a day or two, you can just reserve it. An agent will set the land to sell to <your name> only for x days. Reserving land doesn't make it yours though. Any prims you put down will be returned, etc.
