This is prob. such a noob question, and I did look in knowledge base but can't find the answer. Can I use my USD balance to buy lindens?

Yeah you should be able to. I think if you try to buy them it will take it from there first. Could be wrong though.

I think you're right there, I'm pretty sure all financial transactions use the money in your US Dollar balance first and only go to your other funding source if there's not enough money there. |

You can but be aware that the quoted price they give you doesn't include fees so (like I did) if you push the limit it'll take up to a couple cents out of your secondary form to cover any extra fees your USD balance doesn't cover and with fees on your Paypal or CC transaction those couple of cents (at least 30 cents I think for buying) can really baloon up to a couple of dollars.
