How does someone steal items from a front porch when items are locked?

Check and verify that it's locked still.

I have a skybox that I have locked into position over and over and over, but every day or two it comes unlocked. I filed a support ticket, but no response as yet.

Locking just prevents them from being moved while rezzed. They can still be taken after a confirmation dialog. If marked for sale they can be taken as well, I'd think. Or it could just be another case of the disappearing items bug.

Check your transaction history (in the "My Account" section of the web site), and include L$0 transactions. Do you see anything that might be your missing items?

Sometimes items are set for sale even though you didn't do it intentionally. If comes to your land and buys it, they become the owner and can unlock and take it.

If you are wondering how people would know your stuff is for sale, do a forum search for threads on the "searchbot".

There are a few cases where things can get "stolen" (they have to be transfer):

* someone with mod rights can simply "Take" any object you have rezzed so it's generally not a good idea to permanently leave someone with them, no matter how much you trust them right now

* if something has "Share with Group" set, then someone else in the group (who has the ability to) can simply "Take" that object as well

* for group-deeded items someone in the group (again with the proper ability set) can set the item for sale and buy it back from the group

If you - accidently - put something for sale and someone came along and bought it, you'd have a record of it on your transaction history on the site (make sure to check "Include L$0";).

Cases where things can just dissapear after being rezzed:

* you rezzed them and afterwards the sim crashes (if it happens while you're there, a telltale sign is the "Your location isn't available" upon relog). If it's been more than an hour since you rezzed them, it should be safe

* the sim you were on was rolled back to a point before you rezzed them (won't apply to a mainland sim, and hopefully when a private sim owner rolls back, they'd let all their tenants know about it)

* someone with mod rights deleted the object, or (if it was something you built yourself) the land/sim owner deleted it (if the item is no copy then a delete just acts as a return)

* "Allow everyone to move" was checked and someone dragged it off somewhere

* the item just *poof*'ed for no real reason. This is rare but it does seem to happen every now and then

I think that's most everything :).
I'll be a lazy Kitty and just recycle an old post :p.

Locked or unlocked wouldn't make any difference in any of the cases.

(If it happens to be poseballs, they're likely just invisible - View menu / Show Transparent will show them if they're there. Saying (in main) show or /1 show should make them reappear. Otherwise just sit on them with show transparent on and stand up again, that should do it too :))

As far as I know, the only thing "lock" does is make it a little more difficult to accidentally edit or delete an item. It doesn't actually act as a security feature.
