I keep hearing about an avatar ruler, which gives approximate in game height, in actual foot/inch numbers, or such?
I've searched for how to access it, but so far I've come up empty with it. What exactly do I need to do, or is it something sold? If the latter, where? I'd like to keep my avatar an at least marginally realistic height..

There are thingies you can find and click on in newbie areas for that, but you probably shouldn't pay attention to them - you'll end up looking like a shrimp. There's a height competition of sorts, especially among the male avs, to the point where in feet and inches nearly everyone in SL is NBA material. I'd suggest you just size yourself to be a passable height in mixed company, and forget about arbitrary rulers. When in Rome...

Har, even with every slider set to 50, the closest to 'middle' you're gonna get on a 0-100 scale, avatars are too tall in SL.
I'm a male... one who keeps his av's height accurate as best as possible, and while I might look like a midget among the genral human crowd of NbA-wannabes (thugs that they are), I'm proud of the fact I actually took the time to edit my appearance until it was exactly how I wanted it. The rest of the clowns around me obviously don't, and so they'll rightly look like freaks.
Teresa, next time I'm in-world, I'll give you a copy of the av ruler, and one that I hope is the most accurate out there. Don't let nay-sayers try to dictate what is and isn't possible here. Only the system itself can do that.

Avatars too tall ? I've noticed. Granted, my avatar is intended to be taller than the norm, at 6'3", but I'm not certain where that falls, in terms of the sliders, so I'm wanting to make sure I don't have it too tall right now. Right now its at height 100/legs 60, and it seems about 'normal', but... I'm nitpicky about things like that, though, so...

You can get a number of different free avatar rulers in the freebie boxes at places like Yadni's Junkyard. Be warned, however, that these report eye height, not height to top of head. This is one of the main reasons that the average avatar height in Sl is "too tall".
If you want an accurate measurement, resize a prim and convert its metric height to feet and inches.
If you can't find one elsewhere, IM me and I'll give you an avatar ruler.

Okay, I found one!
It's at The Dollar Palace in Mega Resort. (81,202,501) (Just in case anyone else wants to know)
Or... is that one of the ones that just measures to the eyes? I'm trying to get my two avs adjusted. I have one that 'should' be 6'3", and one that should be 4'10"
Wanting to get them both right, after all, that's the first good public measurer I've found.

From: Ceera Murakami If you want an accurate measurement, resize a prim and convert its metric height to feet and inches. that's really the only accurate way to check your height. take off your ao, shoes and hair, and rez a prim and stretch the blue handle up through your middle until it hits the top of your head. take the reading in the z size and multiply by 3.281 if you want it in feet.

All avatar rulers that you touch to get a report of your height will report your eye height, and yes, they do count the height of the high heeled boots that you happen to be wearing at the time! That is because putting on shoes or boots changes your eye height.
These rules all use an LSL call designed to accurately position a camera for mouselook. They have no way to know if the "top of your head" is a bald scalp, 5 inches above your eyes, or a poofy hairdo 8 inches above the eyes, or prim fox ears ten inches higher, or long rabbit ears that are 18 inches above your eyes at the tips...
The only sort of ruler that will accurately display real height would be something that allows you to manually position a prim so it just touches your head at the point you consider "the top".

Hrm. The one at Dollar Palace in fact said that the shoes would be counted, so I measured with shoes off. Ehwell. The best way to get an accurate ruler would be something that looked at the numbers on your measurements, between height, leg length and torso height, and such, wouldn't it?

From: Teresa Stenvaag The best way to get an accurate ruler would be something that looked at the numbers on your measurements, between height, leg length and torso height, and such, wouldn't it? No. Because those numbers are also affected by your gender setting, and can't take directly into account any shoes or prim parts. Also, the numbers are a relative change from a value of 50, and don't relate to any direct numeric valie in inches, If you're wearing a whole-head prim mask, like a sports mascott, or prim hair, or even avatar hair that is poofy, that changes where the "top of your head" is, and has nothing to do with the slider settings.
