I rarely turn it on, myself. I have a low-end video card built into my system, and the added 'pretty effects' from shiny don't add enough to be worth bothering for me. I have yet to see any advantage at all from the extremely limited SL implementation of bump mapping.

About the only time I turn it on is when designing something that might benefit from being shiny, for those who have higher-performance video - so I can see roughly what they might see.

My computer defaulted to Bump and Shiny, so I always see it. In the older clients, I used to have to turn it off (this would be pre 1.7), but that was because I was on a laptop with no real graphics card. SL also used to run like a slide show then too.

Despite my low-end videocard (the desktop I tend to use is four years old now), I enable bumpmapping and shiny... the effective 20% reduction in framerate (dropping from 15 to 12fps) is acceptable to me... might not be for others, but hey... it's my call... and I prefer the look of things with it enabled.

I sell buildings commercally and include bump mapping and shiny textures in nearly everything I build. I have a low spec graphics card and have no problems enabling the options, I even have a sign in my store encouraging customers to enable the options. Allot of the best stuff ive seen in SL utilises shiny textures too so I think you are missing out if you dont have it enabled.

For those that have never seen 'shiny and bumpmapping' ingame, there is a selection of movies we made ingame, that captures the difference.
http://www.wba-advertising.com there are quite a few examples there, if you search through the various designers pages.

I wouldn't be without 'shiny' in SL - I love shiny things. But I've yet to see what bumpmapping means as I see no difference when turning bumpmapping and shiny on or off except for the obvious difference in shininess.

Things look entirely different if a bumpmap is used, and I add that sometimes to things, but not always (as I know most people don't enable it so don't always bother). Conifer, make an object, texture it, then set the bumpmap to something. You'll see.

Without shiny, there'd be no point in enabling renderdynamicRefleflections. . .

And Bumpiness-->Brightness makes the stars on my bedroom ceiling shine a little brighter.

/me goes back to welding 12" fan to graphics card.

Shiny and local lighting are a must. Damn my framerate, without them everything is just soooo boring.

i like shiny i have a fairly stout video card so it doesnt make a huge dent in my performance

bumpamping on the other hand (they used to be seperate options) i find mostly useless on average you have to be within a cupple meters to see it, and its not like its real bumpmaping, the shadows dont move around with the sun or lights, so in biulding i never use it, static bumpmaps can be baked into the texture and wont phase out as soon as your out of arms reach

I <3 Shiny! :D

Would never turn it off. I agree with Osgeld about the Bump Mapping. Seems pretty useless for most textures. I do use bump on my own objects once in a while, usually to add a bit of variety to a default texture or a non-textured object.

I can't live without shiny. Can't, won't. I love building with it. It doesn't seem to impact my performance in any unacceptable way either, even on my ageing G4 powerbook with not much RAM at all.

I'm only new but can I add my 2c? I love the shiny- it adds so much if used sparingly and is well worth it. But SL bumpmaps are really only another texture layer, not real bumpmaps. If texturing is done well a bumpmap adds nothing to the character of an object.
