could this possibly be intentional?

Back in my university days, the IS department was shifting from TOPS-10 to VMS which was mostly backwards compatible.

They had a problem though: you can't put a decommission date on the old system because then you wind up with hundreds of screaming profs on the down day saying "you can't turn that old system off, I have zillions of research dollars counting on it". They had a clever solution; over the space of a year, they degraded the performance of the old system so that no one wanted to use it and migrated. By the end of the intentional degradation, you'd be better off using a pocket calculator than the old system.

So the forums have been afflicted with 503 and 505 errors over the last couple of days. Is this a hint from LL that we should stay away from the forums? Or is it merely putting the client download on the same overloaded system as forums.secondlife?

I doubt it. The web site and forums are going down the toilet on thier own. And since no one at LL ever bothers to read anything on the forums they just don't know and its unclear if they would even care if they did.

If you bought vinyl records in the mid-late 90s you'll have seen they had the same consistency as Bassett's Liquorice Allsorts and sounded like Hissing Sid the Snake did cover versions of all the tracks. CDs were on the up then :)

But as a wise man once said "Never attribute to malice, that which is easily explained by stupidity."
