I run a group consisting of myself and my tenants. Today I was reshaping a plot partly to hand over a few extra prims to a tenant. As far I know the only way to hand the land from group to myself (my land surrounds that plot) to help with changing the shape of the plot is to sell it to myself for perhaps L$1.
I did that today but by accident set it to sell to anyone. There was maybe 30 seconds or as long as a couple of mouse clicks take between selling and buying during which time someone else bought the plot before I get there fast enough.
The land was purchased by a group of two people. I IM'ed them both explaining what I had done. They both replied saying they were at work, not logged in but received my IM by email. If both of them were not logged in how did they buy the land within only a few seconds? Would that perhaps be some kind of landbuying bot? The land was returned to me by them within a few minutes but if not a bot I see no way it could have been done. I hate to sound an idiot but I assume such practices (bots) are an infringement of the rules?

I've heard that when transfering land to yourself always do it for 0L, that way it forces you to set it TO someone and the accidental bot swipe wont happen. Sorry you got your land taken like this...they probably wont ever contact you >.<

Could't you just have given yourself a group role with the ability to edit the terrain?

- Thanks I assumed it was a bot - In the past I have sold it to myself for 0L but selling it to myself as a specific person. This time it told me I must set it for at least 1L. - Imagine a piece of group land rectangular in shape surrounded on all four sides by my own private land. Tenant builds his first house (in a sandpit I guess) but it is square so will not fit. As land owner I can subdivide my land and as group owner I can subdivide group land. I can "give" the bit that used to be my own land to the group and Join. I cannot give the group land to myself as an individual so that it becomes my own and no longer belongs to the group unless I sell it specifically to myself. Note you cannot join land owned by two people of course. Now that my question has kindly been answered just one small off topic I read a lot of bad things about landowners being bad people so I thought I would say how I work. I own enough land for about 8 512 plots. Instead I rent out one 1024 and 4 512 plots all with homes and furniture already in place unless they want to change what is there I give them different homes free or refund the cost if they pay for them, they keep ownership of the house. I charge 250L a week but one young lady doesn't have much money so I let her pay 200L another has land I consider a bit bumpy so they only pay 200L too although they did say they would pay 250L. Everyone gets 139 Prims instead of 117 Prims per 512M, I am currently looking to see if I can give them more. The houses are all nicely spread out to give a little more privacy which does mean I have no garden any more but I moved into a skyhouse so ..... If a tenant is a little unsure about if it is worth having a home often I give them a week or so free. Two had hard times so lived rent free for about a month. As far as land rights tenants get almost complete control over the land (bans, media, etc) I think almost all that is missing is right to sell and edit terrain. It is Mature Land without Covenant so I do ask that in return the abide by group rules which are basically be nice and keep the sex indoors so none of the other tenants are offended. I am at SL to spend time with my RL girlfriend who is away from here, I like being a landlord, building homes and furniture. I do all three for fun not profit. I own 1/8 of the sim and my neighbour owns 1/4, she does something similar. I have made friends of a few tenants and we have a good community atmosphere. Nice landlords are out there somewhere No I am not going to tell you where I live this is not an advert! Andrew

One bot in particular buys and reprices the land in mere seconds to .1 below market value, then someone comes along and buys it and you are screwed. I've witnessed cases where a person intends to sell land to a friend for 1, the bot buys it, instantly resets the price, then someone else comes along and buys it. The previous owner, obviously distraught by someone injecting themselves in an unintended transaction, desparage the person who just bought the land at full price. After discussion, the seller feels bad for losing their land and chewing out an unsuspecting party and the buyer feels bad for buying a plot of land which was stolen from the previous buyer and is unable to return the land, because they paid full price. Meanwhile the bot made a huge sum of money and leave residents at each other's throats.
Bots don't care if you make mistakes or not, all they care about is making the most amount of money from other's misfortunes or ignorance.
Why else would they operate? Certainly not for the benefit of community or fairness in competition. It's all about the money... on the backs of unsuspecting residents.
Bots are an exploit to the good will of people. Do not sell your land cheap, expecting some nice person to come along and use your land in the same spirit. Sell your land cheap, if you want greedy people to become richer.
Some bots are good about returning land, some are not. Either way, the unattended exploitation and traumatization of residents is the norm from these bots, despite the outcome.
I see horror stories every day, far worse than the "land swooping" day of last year.
One bot in particular, admits to being a Linden right here in these forums, yet still continues to operate multiple bots, directs other Lindens to remove legitimate scripts and throttled the search mode to eliminate any possibility of a resident finding a reasonably price plot of land. Hence providing a barrier to fairness and funneling tens of thousands of real dollars every month, to select accounts.
LL does not care if it's own employees have alts and run businesses within SL. In fact, it's encouraged.
It's the height of corruption.
