Speaking about megaprims ... if I want to use, say, a 20x20x0.01 plane to build a pond surface on my land or the floor of a platform @ 700m (both on the mainland), is this a crime which will cause the Governor's stormtroopers to hunt me down?

I think you're safe from the stormtroopers, I believe though they may delete them on the mainland if they feel it's causing a problem in your sim.

A .01 thick prim may not be enough to stop a fast landing av! Let us know how you get on with that!

Just checked my inventory. The SLExchange huge prim pack (FREE!) includes prims that are:
256x256x1 1024x1024x1 2048x2048x2 (!)
Can't put my finger on it, but have read somewhere in the forums that LL has said it does not support huge prims but will allow them on the mainland as long as they are not abusive or disruptive; and on a private island, anything goes that the owner allows.
Rezzed the 256 baby once, it seemed to go out to the horizon. O.O Haven't got up the nerve to try the big ones yet.
And grass textures are available, somewhere...

The huge prims can cause alot of problems - so if you have to use them - so far the safest one is the 20x20x5. The huge globes can cause AVs to start randomly 'floating' and loss of AV control. The even bigger prims can cause the whole sim to crash or freeze your neighbors. I don't know the effects on a private island. Most of the huge prims are not editable, and most are phantom. A strange bug with them is you can hollow them out - but they still remain solid though they look hollow.
Have fun - they are free on Slexchange to download.

The only Mega prim I have used is the 256x256x1. There are 2 odd glitches I have found with it. 1. At times the texture on it will not render if you are near the edge until you walk towards the center about 20m. 2. Sometimes you cant rez prims or objects on it. This seems random or possibly varies from on eupdate to another. No sign of crashing or undue stress on the island for us BUT I am extremely anal about lag reduction so the island runs super fast at all times. This kind of problem might not show for us where it would for many others.

Well as you can see...i got ripped off!! Simple newbie error I paid 250l for a pack of 80 huge prims that i now see are freely available elsewhere. Doh! That said, I am very happy with the results and believe huge prims, used responsibly, are a very good thing. Just dont pay for them like I did.

Back about 100 years ago, when steerage immigrants to New York were in full swing, there used to be a class of grifters who would greet new immigrants, focus on the ones who were trying to get on a train to the Scandinavian and German immigrant communities growing in the Upper Midwest at the time, offer to help them buy their tickets and put them on the train to their destination. They would soak the immigrants for everything they had, them lead them over to the trains - and put them on the subway... Congratulations. You have officially left Ellis Island and your real education has begun.
