This may have already been done to death somewhere else and for that I apologise.
I am the land owner and I have set up a Shopping Mall with 7 individual units. Each unit can be rented and has a set amount of prims per unit. I have also set up a group for my Shopping Mall Traders.
Questions:
1. What land permissions should I set to allow Traders to vend their products?
2. What Group Permissions are necessary for my Traders?
3. Do I need to deed anything?
4. Is their a mechanism for connecting my "Traders Group" to the Shopping Mall land.
5. Is there a mechanism for connecting a Trader (who has just rented a unit) to my Traders Group or does he/she have to use the search facility.

I believe the land must be set to the Trader's group, but I don't think it has to be deeded to that group. I may be wrong there. Setting the land to the Traders's group is what links group roles in that group to what can be done on that parcel.

The group roles that by default are allotted to any member of the Traders Group, need to include the ability to create objects and to run scripts.

Auto-return is usually a very good idea. Any prims not belonging to you or set to the Trader's Group (Placed while a trader was wearing that tag), should get returned after 5 to 10 minutes. That allows customers to unpack their merchandise in the store. Otherwise, set create objects on the parcel off for anyone not in the group, and your customers will have to go elsewhere to look at their merchandise.

You can set your rental system to give out a notecard that explains mall rules, prim limits, and anything else. The requirement to join a specific group is usually mentioned there. They must use Search and find that group, and join it.

Alternatively, you can use a closed group, that one or more store managers must invite a merchant to join. This is often the wise course. Have the notecard inform the new merchant that they must IM you and request admission to the Trader's Group. You then get the IM and offer them an invitation. This prevents griefers and troublemakers from joining an open group and gaining the same rights as your merchants. You don't want random non-merchants to be able to place prims on your mall land.

Deeding to group is not necessary unless your tenants need certain powers that require the land to be group owned, such as changing media. Since you have a mall, I sincerely doubt you want all your tenants to have the power to change the media.

As for setting to group... come on. It's on the general tab, the first thing you see in About Land.
