Instant Message outside of SL client

I was just wondering if there was any way that I could message a person in SL, without actually loading up the SL client myself. There are times when I am unable or just unwilling to run the SL client, due to being on hardware that exceeds the minimum listed requirements yet still unable to run the client at any reasonable speed, or with any reasonable stability (such as my Mac mini). Because I am in a situation where I don't want to run the SL client, however does not mean that I do not want to talk to friends that are on SL. A libpurple module (for pidgin and such) would be prefered, but anything, from another program, to something on the SL website, would be nice. Just a pain when my friends are difficult to get a hold of outside of SL anymore, and that isnt always an option to reach them with.

I believe if you have your offlines go to your email that you can reply to them (be sure to clear the text field so your email addy doesnt show). I've never tried it, but have gotten messages in game from someone in email before.

I do it all of the time. My friends always wonder where in the heck I am. I just tell them I am on the outside answering them and am not in. I love it, no pesky IM's while I am trying to be funny. *wink*

You could try sleek:

Sleek = http://delta.slinked.net/programming/sleek/

this is a text based SL client which also allows you limited movement teleport and inventory access. At the moment it doesn't allow you to see you friends list, but you can IM them by searching for them by name.

However, it still logs you fully onto SL so whilst it doesn't place the same demands on your hardware as the full client it still uses the same sort of network bandwidth.

Sleek sounds great. I dont care if it fully logs me in or not, I just don't want to have this big, bloated, POS running. The bandwidth isn't that big of a deal. I am primarily a Linux user, and I havent been able to get it to run in WINE (yet), but, it even in a VM it uses WAY less resources than SL. You'd figure, using 2 complete operating systems would be more resource intensive. Thanks.

A webclient that you might want to try is:
https://secure.katharineberry.co.uk/ajaxlife-s/login.kat.

It is support on Firefox 2, Safari 3, IE 6&7, Opera 9 (annoying keyboard focus issues)
and Wii Browser

Information about it is here:

I go to that first link and it asks me to log in with my first last names and password.

why should I trust it with my info?

You shouldn't, that's why I have a protocol that I use when testing this out which is utterly to complex to explain on the forums but needless to say it works to keep my account safe and secure.

You can send messages to SL residents using the following (German) website:
http://www.sltalk.de/index.php/webservicewims

Put the first name of the resident into the first box, the second name into the second box and the message itself into the third. The message can't contain "umlauts".

Please note that the message doesn't reach the resident as a normal IM, but as a message from an object - a green (lastly purple) line on the bottom of the screen. And the message doesn't contain any info about who sent it (it can't as you don't have to enter any sender's data). So I would recommend to include your name into the message itself or the recipient will eternally wonder why his/her conscience has started to talk to him/her...

The recipient can then answer you in an IM and if you have set your preferences so that you receive IMs as email when off-game you can start a dialog by simply answering this email from your email client (the SL mail system strips off your email address, to be on the safe side, strip off your signature yourself before sending). Your answer reaches the resident as a normal IM to which he/she can normally answer and so on...

alternatively you can take a look at:

zonkster.com

it lets you send chat messages to any resident in-world from any PC and is aimed at anyone who can't start the SL client or doesn't want to log on just to send off a message.

example use: you can't make it to your wedding.
