^^^ Welcome to Second Life ^^^ :)

Your not alone , Pretty much everyone who joins SL is pretty confused at first .. its normal :)

My advice to you would be to use places like Help Island Public ( search in map ) and learn the basics of how and why SL works , Ask questions ask for note cards on help for building and creating content .

Allso ask around for landmarks to places that may be of intrest to you on your quest to become an SL artist .

Take your time ... have fun and learn the basics , SL is FULL of people willing to help you and will no dout take the time to answer any questions you might have .

Good Luck and again .. Welcome to SL

My advice would be to take at least a few weeks of doing nothing but exploring and meeting people. I'm not talking about going to all the thousands of sex clubs and malls, but to the interesting sites (as found on many second life tourist websites). Go to the freebie warehouses, take free stuff from the boxes and learn how it all works. Attend some events. Visit some public sandboxes and see what people are creating. If you have a bit of cash to put into the game, buy a few hundred (or thousand) lindens... don't bother with camping pads and money trees. Don't bother with gambling either, it is a HUGE waste of money (unless you REALLY derive joy from putting your lindens into flashy machines).

Once you have experienced life in SL, you will be well on your way to becoming a content creator with some insight into what people want.

I agree with Ylikone completely...get to know the world a little before you do anything else. Once you've settled in a bit, try visiting the Ivory Tower of Prims; the tutorials there should help with your art.

The above bolded for emphasis. You will learn things there that even some experienced builders don't know. Just walk the tour and follow the tutorials. You'll be glad you did.

Seconded!!! The Ivory Tower is one of the GREAT places to learn how to do creative and interesting things in Second Life, and I simply cannot recommend it enough.

Another really neat place is Jopsy Pendragon's Particle Laboratory, which you can also find in search.

A minor explanation that will clear the fog just a little.

You can build 3D art objects within SL (while logged in-world) You can colour or texture them with textures acquired within SL.

But you also can create your own textures outside SL and import them. Anything from a photo of a prize bull to your own design of stained glass window can be uploaded to SL (at 10L$ per image). You can apply such textures to just about anything.

So to make a picture to go on your wall, upload a chosen image to SL, where it is known as a 'texture' and, in-world, make a simple single-prim board to act as a canvas. Apply the tecture to just one face of the board and hey presto - a picture to go on tye wall of your SL house!

Hi Evie. I have a very good friend in SL who's the manager and part owner of a place called The Towers. It's place devoted to artists of all types. They provide a place to put your art together and a place to deplay and sell your art. I emailed her a few minutes ago about your post and she said she will IM you in game............so watch for her IM. Her SL name is Gina Goff.

I'm not sure how much help is available at The Towers for learning the ins and outs of creating your art but they have quite a few artists as members of the group so their is a big opportunity to learn from some of the more successful......everyone I've met there is friendly and very helpful. Gina keeps it that way.........no one abuses anyone there and last long. :)

Along with the other tips above, I hope this helps you get where you want. :)

Heya :) It's super-wonderful you asked, and this is a great place to do so, helpful residents seem to abound in SecondLife, but especially in the forums. Here, let me give you some tips myself :)
-Visit some free classes via Events...Search>Events>Education
You can develop a plethora of skills that way.
- Look up some groups you are interested in. I.e. Open Source Scripters if you wish to script...Search>Groups>OSS or Open Source and look for scripting.
This way you may interact with scripters that are willing to help for free and many who have been programming for a number of years.
-Ask around
There is no such thing as being shy these times in SecondLife. Surf profiles, find a texturer, ask a couple of polite questions. I see nothing wrong with that. Do not, however, ask for their "secrets". That's just ignoramous and rude from my point of view (being a Photoshopper). In fact, an avatar did that once, and it ticked me off so bad...I told him to buzz off. Of course, with this trait, there comes a certain level of bullheaded persistance it seems so hopefully you do not have this. :)
Anyhow, I wish you a happy SecondLife!

Welcome I am about three months old while it gets easier and more addictive, there still things that complex and confusing.
The learning curve is steep, enjoy what there is to enjoy, mute what bugs you:)
I create art and have sold few of my creations. I seem to have put out more money then I have taken in at this point.
This month I averaged 400L in net profits but with shop frees and advertising, etc
I am more in the whole.
It is very hard starting out in unestablished place also.
I decided I don't care if I make money its about the friendship and creating but it means I also have to figure out way to cut expenses back.
It very easy in fact too easy to spend way too much real money on this world.
There are some people who make living in SL but I don't think its the majority.
Personally most of groups I have found its about land deeds not about helping people and communication, sometimes the events no one is there.
.
I have joined and quit several groups and joined and quit more.
I learned groups have there places but mostly they often are a pain unless its your private group just for few friends.
Groups thing really pissed me off when I was newer. Still does sometimes.
Especially when SL is like big ghost town and you wish there was someone to talk too.

Group thing is just major a joke in SL just used for land management purposes it seems, with little to no real control over communication aspects.
It very hard to be in places like NCI and Shelter too because there so many people there it often I develope computer problems or its just to hard to communicate with anyone there
I have friends who go there all the time I myself have only been there 5 times because it so hard on my computer to be there.
Reading helps but it can be bit overwhelming too expecially at first and I am hoping it gets less overwhelming soon.
Reading the content forum helps me a lot.
