Hypothetically speaking, if one were to register a desirable AV name, could one offer it up for sale and then sell it and give the buyer the login/pw to let them take control? Kind of like people do with domain name squatting?

As far as I know, you aren't allowed to give another person access to your SL account or to sell accounts.

I haven't read through the fine print of the EULA, but most online organizations forbid trading of account information, even if no money trades hands.
What normally happens if such is discovered, is that the account is given a lifetime ban, and they don't care what the "story" is for either side, or whether one side cheated another.
Account banned, end of case.

it's against TOS to give away your avatar, or password.

Check the TOS. I believe that's where you'll find the official policy, which basically is that you need to have LL's written permission to transfer an account (av's name and holdings), and that they usually won't do it unless somebody died and has willed their account to an heir.

Ok, thanks for the answers. I guess that kills my plans of becoming a name-baron. ha, just kidding.

I wish the day would come where we could buy our own custom last name at creation. Of course i doubt it would be created instantly, and you may have to wait till you can login due to hookup issues. I remember my first time coming to SL i was very disappointed i couldn't choose my persona's last name and i didn't wish to scrunch it all together as a first name. Thus i chose the random name of Yaffle, and called myself Yiffy so it would match. So basically Yiffy is the avatar of my normal persona Wolfee who is the avatar of me. o.o

You can already buy a custom family name for $100, plus $50 per annum.

Um, they do allow 'sexy'. I just did a people search in world and there are hundreds of people named 'sexy' or some variant of that. Where did you get the impression that it's not allowed? From: Usagi Musashi You know I reported a seller of his account. Reported AR and other location....... you know what llabs did? NOTHING......... Nothing you could See. LL will never tell you what steps they took, Nor what disciplinary levels they considered appropriate in a case where You have Filed an AR. Right in plain language in the TOS sections on ARs they make that Perfectly Clear. As i've explained in Other threads, If you are expecting the offending avie to explode in a shower of Sparks and flying Gore the second you Hit the "Send' button on an AR you are going to be grossly Disappointed. Not Every Infraction Of TOS Is Punishable By Summery Execution. SL has to Investigate, and there are Few lindens to investigate the Thousands of ARs they must receive in a single day. and IF a provable Infraction has Taken Place, The level of response will be decided upon PROPORTIONAL TO THE OFFENCE. The offence might be such where the lindens felt simply telling the offending party to cease and desist was Sufficient. The Warning would be Noted, and any Further infractions would lead to the next level of Discipline. Angel.
