hi there
I have just discovered libsecondlife.
can someone please fill me in on who they are and what they do?
seems they were linked to the copybot which was before my time.
Have also heard they have a testclient that uses less resourses than the SL client.
Is this true? How can i get a copy? Will it really inprove my performance?

There is a text-based-only client: http://delta.slinked.net/programming/sleek/From the website: "SLeek is a mini-client that connects to the Second Life main grid. It’s useful for situations where you want to be in-world, but don’t want to have the huge overhead of the graphics engine. Currently, SLeek has the ability to send and receive chat, send and receive IMs, do people search, teleport, read inventory, write inventory (create and delete folders), follow avatars, and display LL’s web-based login page." I am a mac user, so no idea how (and if) it works

Funny that you should mention this since I was just investigating that site yesterday. I read that the site was linked to copybot; the people there originally had planned to reverse engineer the protocol by which the server and the viewers communicate. What they were going to do with that information I don't know; I'll just assume make their own client for legitimate reasons. Right now, I think they provide all of the code to put your own client together. I don't think they have one built already for people to download and use. However, I downloaded some of the parts necessary to put a viewer together, and it contained a notecard stating that an official version was coming soon. They say that Linden Labs approves of their site; I don't know if that is true.

I use sleek occasionally and can confirm that it works. It will run from a memory stick, so it's useful for communication with friends in-world if you're travelling and need to use internet cafes.

As a Mac user and non-programmer, the whole idea of source code and compiling stuff is kinda scary.
It's a neat idea, though.

It's a neat idea, though. I don't think those fears are unique to Mac users. I know lots of Windows users who wouldn't dream of coding or installing from source. On the other hand, I'm a Mac user, and also a programmer. I don't program for the Mac platform, but I have installed lots of stuff 'from source' on the Mac. If it's packaged right, it's easy once you get over the initial unfamiliarity. I'd be willing to have a go at this Sleek if it were available in a version that ran on Mac (or Unix or Linux) but because it depends on .Net I don't know if a cross-platform version would be possible. I think .Net is a proprietory windows thing. -Atashi
