DP tell us what model you have, and who the creator is; where did you get it. I am a boat owner (SW-100) and it came with an excellent set of instructions.

Mind you boat handling is not that easy in RL or SL - light on the throttle, light on the steering until you get the hang of it - then you can open it up (out at sea preferably) and see what it can really do. Crossing SIM boundaries will be an exciting experience (first time at least) when most fast moving land level vehicles will tend to dive below the surface (glad they don't do that in RL).

Dp, something to check on; look for land owners banlines. They can stretch out into water areas. These can unseat you and crash your boat. My chum came across that with his balloon a day or two back!

Thanks Bilbo.

You're welcome Dp. I've not tried a boat myself, just a car which was purely on cursor keys. Some vehicles have Head Up Displays (HUD) but did your boat come in a folder? If so, is there not a notecard accompanying it?

Most boat scripts will respond to the arrow keys and/or asdw keys for movement.

Almost every vehicle excursion I have gone on eventually ends in a crash. Between flakey sim crossings, vehicle out of control due to lag, ban lines and security scripts, odds are that you will eventually crash.

I've had good luck with a free helicopter I found. It can fly high enough to go over banned parcels and doesn't have trouble at sim crossings. It has passenger room, so when teleporting isn't working I can still go places with other people. Other than that, I have a free motercycle that I like to ride around the sandboxes, but I avoid sim crossing with it.

Not always, though-- or at least if take some precautions you can get pretty far. I hopped on the jetski a couple evenings ago and was able to cruise from my land in Honister all the way up to the far northeast sims before I bumped a resident's ban line in a narrow waterway and was unseated. A couple of weeks ago I drove a little prototype boat I made pretty far into the old original sims before confronting a dam and turning back.

These tips have worked fairly well for me:

-Cruise slowly in rivers and other areas with lots of private residences, staying alert when coming upon unknown properties which may have access lists turned on.
-Stick to Linden protected waters whenever possible. When you're on protected water, open the "about land" window and minimize to see all the protected water in the sim highlighted in yellow around you.
-Avoid crossing into new sims at the corners.
-Make sim crossings at a bit of an angle (not sure why, it may be just me, but this seems to be a bit more stable?)
-Smaller craft with fewer linked prims seem to be more stable in sim crossings. Again, I can't prove it but this seems to be true for me. That's why I like the jetski for long trips as opposed to large boats. I'm also working on a British-style narrowboat that seems to be pretty stable in the trial runs I've made. Find a compact boat with an easy-to-drive script that works for you.
-Make sim crossings at a slower speed. But crank it up on those large, Linden-owned single-sim expanses of water! :-)

It's a shame that vehicles can be as unstable as they are, cuz I think it's a lot of fun to cruise through the SL mainland on a boat. It's a whole different perspective, and, like in RL, you tend to see more of what's around you than when you just fly by or TP. I hope the Lindens continue to add more protected byways (water and land) as they roll out the new mainland sims!

Happy boating,
SS
