whats a copy bot CopyBot is a program that was developed by a couple of people to be a store mannequin. The idea was that you walk up to the bot, ask it to show you an outfit, and it would put on your avatar (complete with attachments) and then put on the outfit you want to preview. However, some people saw this and got a little scared, and so began the CopyBot hysteria. The reason? CopyBot copies the prims attached to any avatar within its visual range, regardless of the permissions on the prims. This is actually a stand-alone program that logs in to SL all by itself. It's not a script, and it logs in to an account you own. CopyBot does NOT copy scripts, and it does not copy images. It also does not actually copy your avatar or any of its contents. What it does is make its avatar look like your avatar, and it rez's prims that look just like prims you're wearing. It can't copy the contents of those prims. It also does not copy the textures on the prims - it simply sets the new prims' textures to the same UUID as the texture on your prims. This is acutally allowed already (you can do an LSL call to set the texture to any UUID). CopyBot was created with the use of a library known as libSecondLife (www.libsecondlife.org), which lets programmers write their own programs that connect to and use SecondLife. Due to the nature of SL, these programs can do things that the SL client and LSL can't do (which is kind of the point), but it also means that some potential exploits can be used, and several have been uncovered by the people working on libSecondLife. Depending on who you talk to, this was either a huge misunderstanding or a covert attempt to steal content or just a bunch of arrogant people showing off. Personally, I lean toward the big misunderstanding side, but also believe that peoples' paranoia is understandable. _____________________
