I have a parcel of group owned land that clicking on the ground tells me it is 3648m. I only have one premium member in the group and 3 alts.
The total contribution for my land is 5698m
The area of my Land is only 3648m
but yet I am contributing 5180 to the group and hence paying the next tier level in fees, oops

Then why don't you contribute just what is needed and tier down afterwards?

Anyway, you may enjoy the warm feeling of having donated something towards the continued financial viability of our gracious hosts. ;)

LOL yes , I feel warm & fuzzy, but I tiered down anyway, not sure how it ended up that way when I sold my previous land then brought the new land, then added to the new land.
Something for other less experienced players to also watch I suspect.

I've never understood why your tier value goes up automatically to the next level when you buy more land - but doesn't automatically go down as well.

Yes, definitely keep track of group contributions. When you sell group land, your contribution doesn't change, you always have to go into the group and redo your contribution by hand.

Anyone know how to tier up without buying more land though? Could be useful if you want to donate tier to a group and have someone else pay for the land.

Land Use Fees page in My Account, https://secure-web9.secondlife.com/account/landfees.php gives you a selector for updating tier level.

Broccoli, I'd imagine in the context that 'peaking' if just for a moment in a given month, into the next tier incurs that tier payment, that you would need to be under that level for the whole month to qualify for the lower tier. Within this time up till the tier due date you can reduce your level.
It should be implimentable to have a 'tier down' switch as well ... but wouldn't make LL any money ;)

The tier setting you select basically represents the highest amount of tier you're prepared to pay. If you are not in fact using all of that tier, then you don't get charged for the part you're not using - but, tier contributed to a group always counts as "used", even if the group isn't using it. (This sounds counterintuitive, but it's because there could be several people contributing tier to the group, and the system doesn't want to get involved in deciding whose tier is used and whose is not.)

The reason why it doesn't automatically go down is that it could drive people (and the database) nuts if when they held 16384sqm of land then sold an 8192 and bought another one elsewhere, they had to change their tier setting twice (once to tier down to 8192 on selling the first 8192, and once to tier back up to 16384 on buying the new 8192).

Thanks bilbo. I must have checked every other link but that one, assuming it to be the page that lists the fees.
