all that comes up is a box which says profile and close when i write a message how do i send it. is there supposed to be a send button?

To IM you just hit the 'enter' button after you type a message. If they're online the person will see it. If not, you'll see a message that they are offline and that the message will be sent when they log in.

You can start an IM from several places. But you MUST have a person in mind to IM to, or a GROUP, whose members will ALL get the IM.
4 ways to start an IM:
1. Right Click on someone and select IM... in the pizza menu
2. Open The Profile of someone you'd like to message. (either in SEARCH, or from FRIENDS, or from the Pizza menu (as in #1))
3. If you have a FRIEND in your Friends List, you can click on his name, and (at the bottom) select IM...
4. Open the IM window with the button at the bottom of the screen. Select a name or group.
(if you're new, and don't yet belong to any groups or have friends, yet, then #4 won't work, yet.) See #1 above. Make a friend, add them to your Friends list (Pizza menu is the easiest way), then you can IM to them from the IM menu whenever you like.
