Can someone please direct me to a good reference on setting up a group and avoiding the pitfalls (which seem to be many). Two main things I need to sort out, firstly a 'Private' group so that a good friend can rez objects etc. on my land. Secondly I want to put up a number of Skyboxes for rental (all on one parcel) which I am told requires renters to join a group. Thanks in advance.

I'll assume you know the obvious, how and how many's and move on to operational tips....
1) Never, ever give anyone else owner powers in the group unless you know them in RL, especially if there will be land deeded to the group.
2) Make a list of rules for joining the group that includes things like an agreement to not spam the group IM channel and not spamming the announcements with advertisements for anything they may be involved in. Make it very clear that the group IM channel is not to be used for anything and if people have a problem they should IM you directly.
3) Did I mention not giving anyone else ownership powers if there is land involved? If other people are going to donate land to the group, draw up a written agreement as to who owns what and how the land will be redistributed if/when the group is disbanded.
4) Never sell group owned land, always transfer it back to your name solely first (or to those who own the land and donated it.)
99% of group problems come from land issues and misuse of the group IM channel, so those are the areas that you need to pay special attention to.
