If this is not a hoax then this development is quite fundamental to the future development of Second Life.

The reason why is that providing this is an official site sponsored by the Swedish Government, it is acknowledging a point that I have been raising for some time, and that is the twin argument of "Where am I" (in Second Life) and the counterparty argument of eminent domain.

In essence this could point to a legal view that Second Life is a place rather than a special type of website, and poses all sorts of interesting points about currency, taxation, land ownership, the Second Life Government, diplomacy, and behaviour.

Views welcomed

Regards

John

I wouldn't read that much into it. Sweden, if it's true, is doing it for the same reason Cisco, IBM, and other corporations are doing it. It's new media, new means to reach existing and potential customers. (tourists are customers of the countries they visit)

In order for governments to start levying tax on land ownership, $L balances, etc. in world, the Terms of Service will have to be nullified - because currently under that agreement, Linden Lab owns all that stuff, not us.

I note that while the articles are called the potential Swedish SLebsite an embassy, the potential project is being touted by the department of tourism and not the department that establishes actual embassies.

What I am saying is Second Life may be a new type of country if you follow the logic, rather than a place where other countries can tax us.

Just a possible view

That sounds very cool. Imagine being able to visit replicas all the great cities of the world?

Sounds more like they would build a mall consisting of swedish companies, not so much a replica of cityscape.
There are small versions of New York, Paris and Rome among others already in SL.

Sorry John, can't visualise Sweden's island being of any different kind of identity in this way, than say Dell or Nissan, except greater variety of course.

A Brilliant Idea, Hooray for the Swedes.

What BETTER way to Promote Tourism in ones region than to have a Carefully sculpted Fully Interactive replica of it in SL?

Joke about Passports, or Kvetch about non existant Taxes as you like. These are people who are REALLY Thinking. I've Been to a Few User created Sims that have Captured Some of the Flavor of Real European and American Cities, But they have been Impressions at Best. If the Swedes do this right, They could Capture a Great Deal of Stokholme, and the Swedish Countryside on a Few Sims and Really show us something Impressive.
If the Model works, we could see Paris, London, New York, Rio, Tokyo, All within SL. Each one Offering Environments, Entertainments, and Virtual Products unique to thier RL regions.

Good for You Sweden, and i Hope Others Follow.

Angel.

There was a nice write up about it in the Metro, London's free daily newspaper.

Well, Sweden is a member of the European Community, so for us folks there is free circulation of citizens :)

I'm sorry for non EC citizens :)
