Lost inventory...what do *you* do?

Hi...

I rent land and condos to residents. I have run into a situation where a resident has lost some things when I accidentially returned items via parcel return.

I have referred my guest to the following article:
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=292

Apparently, my guest was not able to find their things even after contacting support and waiting for about a week for the items to show up.

I have tried to contact conceirge support too. While I wait for them to get back to me, I'd like to know:

* How do you handle loss of your own inventory?
* What steps do you take to recover your things?
* What do you do when items you have paid for are simply gone?

I think this infomation would be valuable to the many people that have lost inventory and have no idea what to do.

Thanks -2fast

I may be the only resident of SL that has NOT lost anything. Of course, I only have about 3k items in my inventory, so maybe that's an issue?

I have not lost anything either and I have lots of duplictes and junk in my inventory. I'm almost embarassed to say how much I actually have accumulated in just over a year.

Part of the reason for my huge inventory is to prevent in-world loss while I am working on something - which has happened to me - but that is another discussion :)

If I had done it, I would pay for it. No, it's not your fault but as a sign of goodwill, it's a nice thing to do.

However, before you do that - did he check for items in L&F that may fallen victim to the "coalesce" feature?

/cry
* What steps do you take to recover your things?
send a bug report, email support
* What do you do when items you have paid for are simply gone?
nothing i have lost may items no one will search a back up of a sim or
the asset server for your item... unless everyone loses everything then they will do a backup
and everything that was built/made between those times will begone :(

Yes..of course...I am going to do that once we exhaust all possibilities of recovering the items.

It is unfortunate that we have to take matters into our own hands like this, but at least we are able to help eachother.

I lost Two entire Buildings, and about L$3K worth of Dance animation Pose Balls when a friend of mine Lost her Temper, and Used either Clear, or Parcel return on her Property. The items Just Vanished. No Trash, No L&F, and No hope of Recovery.

Ah well,
I can recreate the Buildings in a Few Hours (Once i Build them, i can recreate them in a Tenth of the time, But if i had been Smart, I would have Kept Copies already in my Inventory, Live and Learn) and as for the Pose Balls, I sell One Building, and i have enough to Buy Three times as Many. Life goes On.

One can Cry, and Panic, and Rant, and Rave and write a Nasty letter to the Times Or one can simply Take it in a Calm and Dignified fashion, and move on. I prefer the Latter choice to the Former.

Well... until now I lost only one animation in this way (at least that I know of).

What I did? I sighed and tried to remember at which shop I bought it.

That is all.

Sometimes it looks like I lost items from a inventory folder. But after waiting some time, the items appear again. So I have not actually lost anything. Except at least one no copy prim snake crumbled into pieces when I kept rotating it to get it into right position.

Edit / Undo will save you there :).

Rotating will occasionally decide to rotate every link around its own center instead of the linked set's center, not sure why :(.

Tell him to take out his lost & found items starting from the top. It does not matter what the object is, its more than one. It seems they all get bunched up together on a return. So pulling out one object, it can have 15 others as well.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies.

I'll ask my guest to go through their Lost and Found one last time and replace some things.

Perhaps one day, once we address trust and permssions-related issues, there'll be a service where we can store our valued prims, animations, and textures off-world (not including scripts since they live on LLs servers).

I spent ages uploading L$2K worth of textures yesterday and when I logged on today they had vanished. Not bothered about the loss of L$ but the real pisser was the wasted hours doing the uploads. Bulk upload I hear you say... nope, my client crashes as soon as my cursor hovers anywhere near the bulk upload option. Aaaah the joys of SL :)
