I bought a TV and I was wondering if there is a way to play videos on it. I know there are items you can buy in game that do that but I want to play videos that I have. Also, is it possible to stream from youtube?

It is possible, but.. you'd need land to be able to stream. What a scripted item does in world is simply set your About Land/Media to stream the feed to the land and onto any prim with a specific texture on it.

When you say you bought a TV... what exactly did you buy? A Freeview TV you will find in your inventory, in the Library folder (do a inventory search), you have to be able to deed the receiver, if group owned land, or simply rez it on your own land (not rented), and once setup, will play virtually any SL compliant media. If I read your post correctly, you are wanting to play your own DVD's, or those hosted on uTube. uTube use 'poster' http pages to render their hosted movies, the urls will not work. To play your own DVD's (assuming you have permissions, otherwise its against the law), you first have to prepare them for the internet and make the file formats compatible with those supported with SL. QuickTime MOV format is one of the best the client can render, but you will need to have a host server. This can be either one sourced on the internet, where you ftp the movies to for streaming, or turn a PC into a streaming server, if you have the hardware and bandwidth connection (not a cheap option). The balance between media quality, resolution (movie screen size) over streaming quality is a constant fight, even with a lot of users having much more bandwidth these days. SL's client requiring quite a lot of bandwidth, so target your movies to use less than 100kbps data rate, and see what quality you can acheive. The streaming servers come in 3 varieties:- 1) RSTP - full streaming (most expensive). 2) Progressive download (watch as its downloads). 3) Down load and watch (cheapest but you have to wait for the movie to finish downloading before you can watch). Normal web hosting servers do not support the first 2.

You may, you just have to have a place to host them.
If you have a website, you could place your movie file, say .mov or .mpg, somewhere on the site, and just plug the url into the appropriate place in your land settings. The other thing you need in your land settings is a texture that will be replaced by your movie- your scripted television has probably already done that for you.
If your scripted television has menus set up by notecards, you could even put your movie in the menu.
Playing movies this way are not "live" streams. If you are halfway through the movie, and someone else shows up with you and starts the movie, that person will be playing it from the beginning while you are at the halfway point. However, if you and your audience are all starting the movie at the same time, it will probably play through for everyone at about the same speed, assuming no lag or disconnects.
Creating "live" streams is a more complex process. The format and the hosting of the movie is more complex in a way that I haven't researched. You can do it, but it's more work.
