I had a freind to tell me today that someone had attached an object to them that caused them to look like they passed gas and had smoke like around them and also some text to it in chat which looked like he had wrote it but he didnt. He became quiet embarassed by this and was upset. Is there such things in sl like that? If so how do you all feel about someone being able to do this to you?
thanks

No, it's not possible.

What happend to yoru friend is a "follower" for lack of a better term. It's a scripted object that follows your friend closely and is either invisible, or very very small.

Moving quickly, or TPing will confuse the object and have it lose track. Some are scripted to "re-follow" if the avatar comes back within 96m range (range of scritped sensors). In this case, best thing to do is move slowly into a corner of a sim and TP out, or move into an area (like most Linden roadways) that has auto-return on to remove the object from around yoru person.

Some of these things can be funny gags, or can be harrassment. Each is on a case by case basis. If you're friend felt it was harrassment, he/she should report it.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

Your friend can also go into view transparents (cntrl-alt-t) and look for it. It's likely to be very close to him, but could even be inside him; remember, our avatars are a construct also, and have a center point. If your friend can find the object, he can use edit to find out who the griefer was that sent it.

Have your friend be very careful in his search. I would expect such an object to be 0.01m or even smaller. He might also go ask help from one of the Star Wars Role players in SL. Most of them have a device called "Force Prophecies" and it has a built in sensor for detecting objects & active scripts. They can pinpoint the coordinates for your friend as to where the object is hiding, i believe, since it sounds very much like this is probably going to be an active script if it's emitting gas and random "chat"

Particle emitters (i'm assuming that the "passing gas" emitted a green or brown partcle "cloud";), start at the center point of themself and then use an offset where to generate the particles and a vector for where they will travel. If your friend wants to hunt for the object on their own, they can use that knowledge to backtrack. Though i would first check inside my AV, if I were him.... slowly and very carefully.

If he merely wants to get rid of it... Jessica's advice is best: go somewhere that auto-return will kick it back to the griefer, or just TP away.

Additionally, if you'd like one of these for yourself, I'm pretty sure I saw one in a little gag shop on snowcrash. Friend did it to me once, it was worth a chuckle or two, nothing to get into a panic over.
