No, there is no limit. Personally, I have never deleted anything from my inventory. Some people who have large inventories complain that items go missing occasionally but i've never experienced that.

No limits, but I would strongly suggest implementing an organizational system now, before your inventory gets away from you. Also, if you have a number of items which you don't want to delete, but don't really need at the moment, box them up. This reduces your inventory load time, as well as making your inventory searches faster.

I have bad habit of having messy inventory which I keep procasionating to clean it up and I have over 13k now maybe more with taking down stuff at last land.
One day it took 8 hours or more to have my inventory rez.
I notice the shortest time takes about 20 minutes before I have all my files.
Is working on personal research system for better prim and inventory storage.
Though I wish objects when you buy them were more clear about what permissions are available not cut off in title.
I really don't want to buy certain type of permisions any more for my storage system to work.
Don't buy items that don't allow you to copy.
Certain Things like skins I won't buy no copy no mod for prices they are selling them at.
If you can copy the object you can create prim storage file.
If you have all permissions you can add them to notecard and them in your prim land based filing cabinet for storage and when you need copy take out item copy. When you don't need the extra copy delete it.
Less stuff in inventory, less chances of lossing stuff. Or at least I hope its so.

I just encountered a sort of limitation on my inventory. I was reorganising my wardrobe and decided to make a series of 'quick change' ready made outfits. To do this I needed to copy and paste several items from the general clothing folders for each new outfit. I found they would not paste into the outfit folders, which sub-sub-sub folders, but had to be pasted in the level above and click-dragged into the required folder.

I click-drag everything in my inventory, it takes a little longer but works every time and ive never lost any items by using this method, whereas when ive pasted in the past I have had a few items go missing.

While there is no set limit, the more items you have in inventory, the slower the avatar runs SL. Try the same actions in the same sim with an avatar that has 10K+ items in inventory, and with a new alt that owns almost nothing. The one with a nearly empty inventory will move and perform much faster, even if what the two avatars have on is identical.

If I box stuff up inside a prim and keep that in my inventory, will my av load faster than if they are not boxed up?

Box it in a prim that you leave on land you own. Kind of like having a dresser, or closet. It only will count as 1 prim on your prim allowance for your land, and you can put as much in it as you need. I haven't done it yet, but I really need to! I have so much freebie stuff I've gathered lately, and haven't had time to look through, that it is severely affecting my av movements.

I've got a self-imposed limit of 2000 items on my inventory..just an arbitrary limit but I based it on what I figure I can keep track of and use. Stuff that I don't use, I delete. I'm also using the 'storage prims' idea, I have 4 or 5 prims on my land that each hold a different 'category' of stuff. On the other hand, even with a small and well-organized inventory, I still find half the time I'm walking in treacle (molasses) if I can move at all. :-/

But movement issues aside, I can find pretty much anything in my inventory because there isn't much in there and what is there, is organized. Now if only they'd fix the permanently opening folders issue.

Trust me, don't let your inventory get out of control. I just recently cleaned out my 14,000+ inventory and finally reduced it down to around 8,000. It took hours, lol. Watch out for multiple items of the same kind; you can do this by using the search box in the inventory. I make good use of the default folders such as Objects, Clothing, and Body Parts since they cannot be deleted. That way I can reduce the scrolling up and down space when I first open the inventory. For example, I created a Vehicles folder and put sub-folders inside of it named Boats, Cars, Trucks etc. This makes finding things much easier for me.

I'm trying to thin out my closet as well. one thing that I wish could be better was, the No transfer items. I understand the reason some items, especially clothes and hair are no transfer, especially when copyable, but it is a shame that i sometimes delete clothes that i either don't wear much or don't like them as much as I thought when purchasing. I don't fault the creators for protecting their work. Getting my money back is not an issue, I'd like to see maybe a Goodwill, where maybe things can be donated that aren't resellable. I hate deleting things that someone might be able to use that someone has spent time creating. One tip, most items come with all kinds of unneeded FYI stuff, landmarks, preview picks and note cards that can be deleted if not wanted.

I don't understand why it would slow down your AVs movement if your inventory is full of stuff. How can the inventory item count affect how you move? I would understand if you were "wearing" a bunch of stuff, but otherwise I don't get it.

I have never noticed a slow down of my Av's movements because of a large inventory. Movement and load time is the same for my main Av with which has a huge inventory and an alt with just the basic library. Maybe i'm just special, people always tell me im 'special' :)

I think it's because it slows down the network speed if you have to download the 'list' from the server. To use the 'internet is tubes' theory that some idiot politician created, that inventory list is HUGE (as in lots of kbs huge) and clogs the tubes, slowing down the other information flow around it. ;)

Sorry, this was the best way I could think of to describe it and isn't meant to be an insult to anyone's intelligence other than my own.

I haven't noticed a major slowdown, but then, over the time I've played, I've learned to only open the inventory if I'm standing still.

I would just like to caution people against packing a lot of high-value items into a single prim.

With Second Life's recent penchant for vaporizing items when we try to rez them, you may just lose all of your precious wedding photographs in a single server fizzle. Over the last couple of months I have replaced dozens of products for customers that pulled them out of their inventory only to find that they didn't rez.

I am not saying to avoid using this method - I am merely suggesting you spread things around a bit so that the loss of a single prim isn't going to wipe out a large percentage of things that are important to you.
