Downloading Animations?

I know you can download textures that are full perm... but what about animations? Is there anyway to download animations from SL?

Reason? I am using OpenSimulator at work and it is a stand alone ((ie not connected to SL)) and I need to do some building in it for RL work and would like to use animations I have already paid for and upload them there to OS. Is this even possible? Is this legal? ((this is not a for sale item it is simply for RL work))

On the legal side: I'm assuming someone else owns the copyright and you bought the animation within SL. In most cases, when you buy an animation within SL, you're relying on an implied license for use within SL. Even if there are explicit license terms at the time of purchase, it's unlikely they would extend your rights beyond the SL virtual world. I'm not a lawyer, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think you'd be hard pressed to prove that you have any right to use the animation outside of SL.

I suggest you contact the owners of the animation for permission. They may be more than willing to give you permission for internal use by your company. Depending on their business acumen and perspective, they may even give you permission to redistribute as long as they're credited.

My personal perspective, on the other hand, is that it would be more professional to contract with them in RL, being prepared to pay RL fees, while expecting them to go on the record that they haven't infringed on any other copyrights. In other words, get a legally binding contract that's been drafted or reviewed by your attorneys.

The SL client doesn't offer a service to download anims the way they do textures.

It could be modified to do that, but that might be considered a TOS or DMCA violation -- definitely if it permitted saving anims that are not full permissions.

The best and simplest course is to contact the animation creators, as mentioned above.

Second Inventory allows the moving of animations between SL and Opensims providing that they are full perms, or you are the creator. So, yes, it can be done.

With the normal client, no. Even full-perms animations can not be saved to your hard drive from SL.
